    Undigested food in stools

Hi All. My nearly one year old has always had funny bowel movements, but her latest trend is to have on and off diarrhoea with completly undigested food in it.

Today she had some tomato at lunch, and grapes for afternoon tea, and both of these have come through in a watery poo looking the same as when they went in. Is this normal?

She was born in the caul, and I've always wondered if she has missed out on some intestional flora. She was breastfed for 10 months, and is now on formula, so could this be doing it? Or could it be a temporay lactose intolerance (our family had a bout of gastro about three weeks ago).

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

Maybe talk with your doctor if you're concerned?
some things do tend to come through relatively unscathed - we just notice it more in our kids because we're alwasy inspecting their poo

From your description, I'd get her checked over by a gp.

Some tougher to digest things don't get digested till they are much older. Things like tomato and grape skin, carrot and sultanas usually come thru unchanged - well the sultanas are just rehydrated lol.

My 3 c-section babies have obviously missed that route to pick up the gut flora but don't have any major problems with their tummies. If you are worried, absolutely see the gp

Raisins are still not digested by my DS! There are other weird things that occasionally come out undigested too. And like a PP said they are things with a skin, tomatoes, sweetcorn etc.

I was reading my NHS (UK National Health Service) baby/child guide book about poos and they said that often toddlers get what they call 'toddler diarrhoea' and it is nothing to worry about. What they did say to look out for is if there are no poos for a while and lots of straining or pain and then the occasional watery poo which they say is stools leaking out around a constipated stool. Is she going pretty regularly?

I agree with you that I think this is a gut flora issue too. I would start her on good quality probiotics ASAP.
