I've just started DD on Losec for her silent reflux after Zantac didn't seem to work (gave it a good 1.5 months). I'm confused about how to administer it. She's on half a 10mg tablet twice a day. The doc said I'd need about 30ml water in a bottle to dissolve it & give it with (since I'm solely BFing) but also seemed to indicate I could add it to EBM instead. I've also had a lot of people say they dissolve it with water in a syringe. That requires nowhere near 30ml though. See how I'm confused? How do YOU give it?
Get it made into a compound phebee - soooooo much easier.
There aren't too many pharmacies that compound, but I know the pharmacy at St John of God Hospital in Subi does it. There is also a pharmacy on Guildford Road in Maylands that compounds (its where I get my DD's compounds done). If that location suits you let me know and I'll dig out their contact details for you because you need to call ahead and give them notice.
We travelled to a pharmacy that would make it up into a liquid. The Losec like zantac tastes pretty yuk so if getting your bub to take it is a problem the pharmacy can often flavour it. We had bubble gum flavour. I had to ask for the flavouring as it wasn't offered up front as an option.
Not sure how old you DD is but my son started taking Losec around 11mths. We disolve it in a mix of water and juice. The smallest amount we can just to make sure he drinks it all. He doesn't seem to mind it but that's the only time he has juice so he probably just thinks that's what juice tastes like
It is a royal PITA to dissolve as you still have the little balls that can NOT be crushed so need to get baby to swallow them also. It is worth the money and effort of getting a script for suspension made up at a compounding pharmacy. They can flavour it using only certain flavours due to the nature of the drug and what it does, but DS1 was a pina colada type one !
I use a shot glass and put the tablet in bottom then add about 2.5ml of water and suck up and down with a syringe and then syringe it into baby s mouth. I then add another 2ml of water to the shot glass to get the dregs of the tablet and give this to bub.
30ml is way to much to be trying to get baby to take.
That's what I thought. When I did it this morning I used the syringe but I went through about 6ml before she got it all. She got most of it but some went on her chin, lol. She was so good, didn't complain at all! Just made a little bit of a face towards the end as if to say, "aren't we finished yet?" lol
I agree with getting the suspension, SO much easier and nicer for bubs than the tablets. SJOG Murdoch Pharmacy (in the medical centre) also makes it
When I've used the tablets, I actually get a few of the fat, disposable syringes from the pharmacy and put the tablet inside the syringe then suck about 10ml of cooled, boiled water (or what ever the GP has recommended) into the syringe and dissolve the tablet in the syringe by rolling, flicking and shaking it. I keep a cup of the water handy and just suck up a little more water to get the dregs out at the end and give them to my baby too.
That's ok Give the dregs a good swirl with only say a ml of water then tip the syringe up the right way so the remaining beads settle in the tip then shoot em in! Lol! My DD2 hates the Losec tablets though, so much that the reflux seems easier to deal with!! So I'm getting the suspension made up hopefully today
Well she was fine before but now she hates it! I tried to give her it hidden in a bottle of EBM tonight, but she wouldn't take that either! Usually she has no problem with bottles. It could have been cause I'd changed to a faster flow teat though, or cause she was frantic by the time the bottle was organised. She's asleep now so I'll have to try the syringe again once she's awake. Sigh.
Most babies don't like it so it's not surprising she doesn't either (now). If you want to try milk, use EBM in the syringe that way your not wasting a whole bottle but I'd seriously consider getting the suspension. I think the tablets will do your head in.
We've all made that mistake hon. I've just done it for the second time - you'd think I would have learnt from my first daughter!! You should be able to use your existing script to get the suspension, you just need to know your DD's weight, roughly.
Poor little girl, and poor you. I agree with Taurean - you should be able to use the existing script without needing to go back to your paed. Just ring the pharmacy first so you're not wasting a trip. If they do insist on a new script, ring your paed (or GP - whoever gave you the script) and ask them to either call the pharmacy direct and authorise the suspension, or fax/email through a new script direct to the pharmacy. Will save you time in that the pharmacy will possibly get on it quicker, and you won't have to run around as much.
