Paediatrician - Behavioural assessment... what does it involve?

    Hi

so i took ds to the dr this morning (as he has been sick for a while) and in the middle of the consultation the Gp asked if i have ever had him assessed by a paed?

I told him that i only a week ago so a different gp in the practice who just brushed me off (on more than one issue).

He said that ds in the short time he saw him had signs of hyperactivity and limitied interests in the worl around him and thinks it might be worth an assessment even if all is clear.

who has had one of these?
    what do they do?

We went through this with DD2. He took a very detailed history - of her from conception through to present, as well as the same sort of details for DD1. Also wanted to know the family history of both me and DH. Went through in detail what our concerns were, what her diet was like etc. He obviously observed her a lot over the course of the first three or four appointments - in terms of how she was by herself (with us still in the room - she was only 2.5), with her sister, with her grandmother and with us. We did the initial tests used as indicators for autism, which comprised him asking us specific questions about her behaviour and required no input from her

As far as she was concerned, it was all very non-invasive and non-confrontational - due partly to the fact that she couldn't have handled either anyway, even if required so he had to take a very softly softly approach with her.
