    =O *shocked*

So... DH just got a text message, saying congrats because Shelby is an uncle!

Shelby is our 11month old puppy. Who's sister (from the same litter) who we actually had for the first month or so and she then went to DH's ex wife, has just given birth to 10 puppies!! turns out DSS1's dog and her got along...

I can not believe an 11month old dog has just had puppies!!!! I'm in complete shock! We didn't even know she was preg!

crazy! (and the obvious irresponsible..but lets not get into that...)

I know what you mean Teirae. I recently found out cats can get pg at 15 weeks!

    Crazy!

I suppose we don't think about young dogs or cats getting pregnant so we leave desexing for a while... Just goes to show how important it is while they are young.

Dogs & cats are usually sexually mature by 6 months. Its a load of hogwash about "letting them have their first heat" . Not breeding with them, desex them before they have their first cycle.

It can happen pretty quick and in situations you don't expect. So I would not go trashing people to quick.

Responsible animal owner here, I dog went on heat before we had a chance to get her done, she was of unknown age when we got her and in poor condition so desexing was recommend a bit later than right away. Where are in rural area. So no dogs really wandering around. She was either with us, or locked up in her run. She still managed to get pregnant (well she was showing early signs and the vet advised we get her desexed right away). Found out later from friends who are dog breeders, that they can actually DTD through wire fencing. Could have been a phantom pregnancy or one of the farm dogs came for a very long walk.

I'm not trashing people. I'm just surprised and shocked that a dog that age can get pregnant.

and these dogs live together, they share the same yard. and the father of the pups is a few years old (and obviously not desexed), so they knew it would happen.

You can't get a cat desexed until they are 5 months old But they can get pg before that. The feral kitten we hand raised and gave to Mum is nearly due to have her first litter of kittens already.

T, I don't think the issue is if they could or they couldn't have puppies that early, but rather that it's not ideal. She's done terribly well to have that many puppies at a young age. With our dog, we noticed she came on heat at 8 months old so I suppose it's not impossible.
