Does anyone work at the ATO??

I need help with a question!

DP has received a letter saying we are liable to pay the Medicare surcharge levy for the 09/10 tax year.

What i dont get is why the debt wasnt levied when our returns were completed and the money wasn't deducted from our refunds???

In other words, why now????!!!!

I don't but will hazard a guess - medicare levy surcharge is if you earn over a certain amount and don't have private health insurance. Is there a chance you delcared that you did have PHI but actually didn't and they've just discovered it?

No, i dont think so Ausgirl. We both declared our correct wage and our PHI status...

The other weird thing is that only DP got contacted. I would have thought we both would have been liable??? I think I earned about $2k more than him that year too, so technically, I was the major breadwinner iykwim.

We both had separate cover before dd, and have had to resubmit our private health certificates of cover......which is weird because an accountant does our tax and submitted it all the first time.

We got a letter saying we had to pay back the Eductation Tax Refund. We sent a letter from centrelink back to the ATO record matching place on April 11th and haven't' heard from them since. They stated in the letter they would let us know the outcome, but it's been 5 weeks.

It was also for the same financial year that you guys got your letters from. Wonder if we'll get letters again next year for the 10/11 year.

Maybe they've done some sort of big audit at the ATO for that financial year???
