Question Can't shake UTI - bladder and urethra pain - Possible drug resistance?

I have had 'bouts' of urinary tract infection/cystitis over the years. Last time was 2007.

Feb this year, had a really bad one with blood in the loo. Took a course of antibiotics and was good for 2 weeks and then it was back. Used the repeat prescription and it helped but continued to have 'feelings' of uti without the full on symptoms of burning with urination or blood. Just more aware of bladder and urethra and burning feeling in these areas on and off.

GP prescribed 2 courses in a row of same antibiotic and now on to 2nd course with symptoms still hanging around.

Wonder if I should make another appt for different antibiotic or wait until 2nd course finished?

Anyone had experience of recurring uti's or having to try different antibiotics? I have Ethical Nutrients Urinary Tract Support tablets that help with the symptoms. Used to be able to buy a product called Ureze from Woolies that helped too, but can't get it anymore.

    Thankyou!

Take a sample to the docs and get them to send it to be tested to make sure that the AB's are resistant to the infection you have. What AB's are you on?

Get on some Ural to stop the burning and also try hiprex tablets. They are a anti-bacteria tablet that kills bugs and nuteralises your urine. You can buy it over the counter or if you get a script for them , they are heaps cheaper on script.
also make sure you have heaps of water
Your bladder may be irriated from the infection and hence the feeling that you have an infection, even if you dont. it might take a little time for it to settle down again, esp if it was a bad infection. Also make sure that you are not constipated as the pressure of a full bowel can put pressure on your bladder as well.
My DS has heaps of UTI's due to problems with bladder and kidneys. We now take Keflex AB's for his Ab's but also used bactrim recently as well.
HTH and hope you feel better soon

I swear by the hyprex tablets, as soon as I feel the burn I take one and it fixes it straight away.

Mrs Jak:I feel for you. I have suffered from recurrent UTI's since 2008 when i got together with my DH, thanks for that. Never had them before him!! Worse than labor in my opinion!

I did all the things you were supposed to do, shower, drink a glass of water go to the toilet all before sex (very romantic) then go to the toilet again, drink more water have another shower and i would still wake in the morning weeing blood. I wouldn't even get that "off" feeling that you also get and be irritable then finally realizing it was b/c of UTI. I would have AB's and basically keep getting them.

*I started taking cranberry tablets which are supposed to make your bladder slippery and difficult for the bacteria to hang on.
*Increase your water intake to flush your system seems bad but your body needs the water ao flush out as much of the bugs that could be sitting in your bladder.
*Ural helps neutralize the ph level in your urine so it doesn't sting.
*When you sit on the toilet sit for longer and lean forward so any stagnant urine can be emptied more thoroughly.
*MOST definitely go and see a urologist they will be able to help better than a GP.

For myself as i said it is to do with having sex with my DH my urologist put me on 1 AB tab before i have sex and to still do the other things i mentioned above, the 1 AB (which is keflex/ibilex 500mg) lasts for a 24 hr period.

I still do that now. I just ask my GP to give me a REPEAT script of the usual treatment of keflex/ibilex and i take it as mentioned above.

II was concerned about resistance but have asked each time i have seem a different GP and they assured me that b/c i am only taking such a sml dose i don't have to worry.

Obviously your treatment regime may be a little different to mine, best of luck! xo
