Overnight stop in Albury/Gundagai etc for trip between Melbourne and Sydney?

Anyone got any recommendations for somewhere to stay for an overnight for 2 adults (mum and me) and my two (3 & 1) - we have stayed somewhere in Albury before which was fine but just exploring options. I was thinking might be better to do Gundagai on way there (more driving first day less second) and Albury on the way back.

we stayed in Gundagai on teh way from melbourne. it was called something like the 'pioneer inn' (bad memory lol...it had a motif of a dude on a horse)...it was basically the only one that we saw (it was the first one off the exit into the main part of town), the restaurant that comes with it was quite nice from memory and we had a pretty decent stay there. I know that i would have no worries staying there again.

I know it is vague, but i guess be rest assured that there is a place to stay in gundagai lol.

We decided to do the gundagai stop over last year.... Never again! We hadn't booked so on looking for a room to stay the second place we asked we were looked at and spoken to like scum, in fact i wasn't even sure he knew I had entered the room for a while. We went to a pub for tea but they had nothing for vegetarians so we went to the RSL which has an Asian type restaurant, the meal I ordered was so bad that I refused to pay. In the morning we asked the reception if we might borrow some bowls to eat breakfast but were refused and asked, "why not come and have breakfast here... $15 per serve"... Uuum no, that would cost way too much for seven people.

However the pizza shop was nice, lol

I've stopped at a motel in Gundagai coming from Sydney. It was fine. It was a general chain motel. Nothing to rave about but I was tired of driving and it had a bed. There's more options in Albury but, as you say, you get further if you stop at Gundagai.

Just remember to stop at the Holbrook bakery on the way back. Noms

My house lol. We're about 30ks from Gundagai. In saying that though I have no idea what the motels are like there!

I have stayed at a couple of places in Albury but pre-children. The Olive looks basic from the outside but the rooms are actually really nice. Then we have stayed at the Siesta. This is family friendly and has activities like resort style swimming pool, an indoor one which might be heated not sure & pool table. It is more like a resort. The rooms are old style hotel and a bit worn, but people go for the facilities rather than the room.

Cool will add the Holbrook bakery to the stop off list then - all that driving I will be starving!! I knew about the submarine there I think maybe when we stopped before it was shut. I will take a look at places mentioned - Albury Manor House was where we stayed before - both pre kids and post DD, which did a great breakfast.
