I've read the book an have just flipped through it again after a friend (who hasn't heard about BLW) talked about the "window of opportunity" between four and six months to introduce foods. I remember reading about this in the book but I just can't find it again.
Anyone got a page number for me or can you quickly tell me what the book says about this issue?
Kids eat when they can/want to. Many babies have no interest in solids until they are well beyond 6 mnths. And they do just fine. And I guarantee it doesn't matter what age they are when they are 6 they will line up at Maccas with the rest of their peers - I doubt they'll be going "no, I can't eat because I missed the window of opportunity"
I think it's a 'theory'. I'm not sure what evidence there is of it. Certainly many kids are not ready to eat - and nor do they need to - till they're much older and they do just fine.
I don't know what the book says about it, though.
I wanted a refresher because I'm sure it will come up again and rather than just fobbing my friends off I wanted to educate them so the can be aware of why I'm choosing to do things differently.
I have to admit that I'm having a chuckle at the "window of opportunity" concept. I think that BLS is a brilliant approach, but I wouldn't get too tied up with the timing. All is not lost if babies don't get started on solids till after they are 6 months.
I haven't read the book, but I remember DD was SO ready to eat before 6 months, pracxtically grabbed the food from my hands, but I didn't let her because I really wanted her to wait till 6 months. Alas, at 6months, she had no interest at all until 8 months.
However, DS is now 5months and shown no interest at all!
So I say that if your LO shows serious interest, let her go for it. My DD definitely missed her window.
