    FNQ in January?

Have been wanting to take DD and DH to see the great barrier reef forever. DD is now 10 so I think she could safely snorkel and would really enjoy it. But as DH has his own business we can't just close at any time of the year so really need to holiday in late December/early January.
I know it will be humid and wet up there then but is it still Ok for a holiday? We don't normally swim at the beach so stingers won't worry us but can you still snorkel at the reef in January.
I went to fitzroy island about 25 years ago and loved it so was thinking of staying there but can you snorkel there with stingers around in January?

I personally wouldnt, we do our snorkelling and such in winter. You can hire stinger suits for snorkelling etc and they still run all those activities. You will have to be aware that it can rain pretty much day in day out for weeks, its ridiculously humid and cyclones are unpredictable. If you cool with that, then by all means come on up FNQ is lovely at anytime of year really.

We always use rashies when we are up there in summer. BIL is a diver on the reef and got stung...

Also if it matters, last stinger season was especially horrible and many people ended up in hospital with serious stings. They were warning people to NOT take the risk, especially with children.

Oh poor things those stingers sound awful. Thanks for the feedback - that has made up my mind. I will have to start talking DH into going up there next July. I would much rather be heading to sunny Queensland in the depths of a Melbourne winter. I hate having work determine when we can holiday!
