Fathers day. Making fingerprint keyrings. I need help! Please!

I used a recipe to make a dough from pinterest that you then bake and paint. FAIL!

I'm trying to make a fingerprint keyring for DH for fathers day. I'm not sure what else to try. Has anyone made these kinds of things? What did you use? How did you do it?
I currently have 6 attempts here all of them wrong.
has anyone used clay to do it??

Never with a home-made clay, only with Fimo, available from craft shops.

This is the recipe I used...footprint dough.jpg I did need to bake it about twice as long as it says though for it to harden properly. (It is FAHRENHEIT, not celcius too)

Lulu - no, I actually used a gel food colouring when I made the dough, the girls chose yellow.

ETA: I also used a pointy wine bottle stopper to put two holes in it before we baked it, for a ribbon to go in after for hanging.

How thick do you roll the dough out to? I think I've made them too thin

We made some of these today for father's day and then "painted" them by using tissue paper to blot on food dye. Worked perfectly and really happy with how they turned out!
