    My dental issues again. ....

Just wondering what is normal in regards to pain after tooth extraction? Got my lower wisdom out on Monday. It took a long time to stop bleeding and oozing. Next day had stopped completely. It is now day 3 and I am still a little sore. It's weird my actual gum area inside doesn't seem to be hurting( I have refrained from touching poking etc the area) but my jaw bone is the area that is aching the most. Along the jaw line and at the ear. It kind of feels like when my gum was starting to become infected a month or so ago, before it got real bad. Is that normal? How long til I should be pain free? I am quietly freaking out about dry socket.

If you are worried about the pain, go back and get it checked. The post removal care is included in the cost of the extraction, so you shouldn't have to pay, and they should keep seeing you until its all sorted. I had a major surgical removal where the surgeon had to take some bone out and that hurt like jimminy for at least a week, but a garden variety removal you should be noticing the improvement. FWIW the specialists I saw recommended Panadol + nurofen as the most effective dental pain coverage, if that's not working them that's a good sign you should get it checked out.

    Hope you're feeling better soon.

ETA - dental pain refers along the nerves, so where you feel it may not be where the problem is.

Thanks. I am getting by in a couple Panadol a day so it's not terribly painful. I guess I'm worried it might be the start and it's gonna get worse. I'm at work today and tomorrow so won't get a chance to see dentist til Monday. If its real sore over weekend do I go to emergency for that it after hours dentist if I can find one.

If you are worried, ring the dentist today and have a chat. Then at least you will know if you should go in and see them before weekend, or what to do if the pain escalates/where to go if it does. That will alleviate your worry.

The receptionist said I shouldn't be aching along my jaw bone or ear at this point and it could be infected. I can't get back in for it to be checked til Monday so I am still in soft food diet and have to be careful of looking after blood clot. This is gonna be a long weekend. On the positive I have lot a kg or two! Lol if it gets worse I have to find s dentist that open on the weekend. That won't be easy! :-(

Can you not go in because you can't get there, or did they not have a space for you? Because if they didn't have space they should have made space. If that's the case ring back and ask to speak to the dentist directly. Otherwise they should at least be able to advise what the after hour arrangements are.

Couldn't get in due to being stuck at work. She didn't have any after hours arrangements which kind of sux. There is an after hours dr but I'd rather see a dentist.

Got into a dentist today. He washed it out packed it with some gauze stuff I think it had the clove oil in it. Antibiotics and medicated mouth wash. Is it normal for the clove oil to sting the area!! It's kind of hurting!! Ouch! He didn't mention dry socket yay!

Hopefully the clove oil will help it, that's what they do for dry socket. If it was a dry socket you would know, the pain is intense+++, and then your mouth stinks & tastes revolting on account of the tissue breaking down. But that clove stuff is ace, even if it means everything you eat tastes like apple turnovers. Lol

Thanks so much for all your replies. I do tend to freak out about stuff like this and it was nice to have your advice. The clove oil stuff has helped heaps. At first it stung heaps but after an hour or so it was a lot better. I thought that was a dry socket treatment too but he didn't say that's what I had. Your right everything tastes funny but today was the first time since Monday I have eaten anything substantial so i don't mind. :-)

Thanks. It's much better actually although every now and then I get a little sore in the jaw again but it goes pretty quickly. The clove packing is still in there, it looks horrid. It's brown and there is gunky white stuff on it. Every now and then I taste cloves too. Just waiting for it to come out now. Hopefully that will be it. :-)
