    Extra tooth

So, we have only just discovered that DD3 has an extra tooth down the bottom. It is actually the first tooth she ever got. It wasn't noticeable until now as she has only now broken her eye teeth and molars. The extra tooth is actually in between her two lower central incisors.
I know we need to take her to a paediatric dentist but I'm kinda freaking out after googling. It said it can be an indicator of certain syndromes, which aren't great.
Anyone else had a child with an extra tooth? Was it an indicator of anything or just one of those things?

    It's called a supernumerary and is common/normal, I wouldn't be concerned!!

Thanks Olive. I've never encountered anything like this before. We spoke to the dentist today who informed us that it needs to be removed or else it may stop her adult teeth from coming through correctly. It would unfortunately be an operation under general anesthetic in hospital. I'm now torn as to whether to get it done ASAP or wait until she is a bit older.

Really! I've never had a child have one removed, I don't see why it would prevent ault tooth coming through, adult teeth are designed to push baby teeth out, I'd get a second opinion

It's could affect adult teeth.... it depends on whether it has its own adult tooth underneath or is a single supernumerary. If it is single it won't be stimulated to dissolve its roots and become wobbly and fall out like normal teeth do. So when the neighbouring adult teeth come through they will come in misaligned as they need to miss the extra tooth.

I guess it depends on what you think in terms of removing it.... its hard to judge when it will start affecting the adult teeth..... there is so much going on in the gums before the first wobbly tooth that it would 've hard to judge the right time.... I personally probably wouldn't leave it past 3yo. The bottom incisors and usually the first baby teeth to fall out, and that can start from 4yo. Also, the earlier it is done the less likely she is to remember it

    Good luck x

That's what we were thinking Caz. If she gets it done asap, then she will pretty much not remember. I'm hoping they would only give her the light sedation too. Surely she wouldn't have to go right under with them breathing for her etc etc when it is just one small little tooth that has to be removed?
Anyway, we're going to book in after the long weekend to have all the xrays etc done and we will take it from there.
