    Bleeding belly button

DS2 is two weeks old today. His cord stump fell off neatly and cleanly after about three days. Since then we've just been treating it like we did the other kids' belly buttons, that is, just washing gently in the bath, no soap or anything, just water.

For the last few days it has been bleeding. Is this common/normal? Not a great deal but enough that by morning it is crusty with dried blood. I've been sitting a warm face washer on it while I change nappy to soften the crust then cleaning it as gently as I can. Second nappy change today (so after about two hours) it was crusty again.

    Do I need to worry?

Not going back to MCHN til Thursday. She looked at it Friday gone and said it was fine.

I remember Henry's was crusty for a while, with new dried blood at every nappy change. Lasted a month. There wasn't any puss or green yukkies so I just kept doing the same as you.

Is it mucousy? Could be a little bit of umbilical tissue left there called a granuloma.

Yeah there's no pus or green stuff or mucous. Just blood.

Sounds like I should just keep cleaning it?

This happened with DD2 as well! I was pretty concerned but my midwife said that it is totally normal and can take a bit before it is all healed. she said to take note that the nappy or clothing wasnt sticking to it and that should help...and it did

DDs had a small amount of bleeding/dry blood looking goo for about a week and a half after it fell off. Sounds pretty normal.

It's a bit freaky but the gp told me with my first that there is a giant hole behind that belly button that takes a long time to heal over. Perfectly normal to have some bleeding as long as it is clotting itself (which it sounds like it is) and def no pus or infection symptoms! Just keep cleaning with some warm water and if you want to warm salt water won't hurt.
