    Christmas lights!

So, who does the whole christmas light display at their house?

We did it for the first time last year and would like to build on our light collection every year.

Does anyone have any tips for novices on the best way to put them up? Colour themes? Where to buy lights at a decent price?

If anyone has any pics I'd love for you to share them!

    Christmas lights!

Never done the whole house but I bought some inflatable things off a friend so am looking forward to doing the outside lights AND the inflatables. Might have to put them up on a table so they can be seen though!

We started last year, the area we moved to is big on lights so far though I only have a tree and star shaped lights and fairy lights. I used cable ties to put them Fairy lights up attatched to a decoative metal panel across our verandah. I have a timer on the PowerPoint so the lights go on at 7.30 and off at 10 to save $$$ with the price of electricity.

    Christmas lights!

My husband does our house every year. We have lights, lasers and a few other little things. The best thing I can suggest are solar lights. It was great that our solar ones came on when we'd forgot, or we'd been out or away. DH buys ours online and from local stores.

we use to do it, then had someone steal our lights so haven't done it since.
We should put some up again this year though now both girls are older

I used to go all out, but then got the couldn't be bothereds LOL and back then they were the ones that faded in the sun, so at the end of the holiday period you'd be having to replace them anyway. Last year however I got into solar lights. I won't go back to power again. I did have garden stake powered ones last year but people walked over our yard and a few stakes broke.

Big W this year have extensions available. So if you buy the extendable set and find you don't have enough you can go back to the shop and buy an extension

we have lights out the front, and had soem out the back but they were weather damaged quite badly so they got turfed a little while back.
the ones out the front are secured with cable ties and gutter clips.

we contemplated solar, but next door neighbour had them, and they didn't always get charged up during the day so she was very disappointed. we decided to avoid solar after that.

we have our christmas tree at that part of the house, so the lights all tie in together

we have santa climbing a rope, star, santa in plane, snowflakes, ropelights and icicles. all the simple stuff we got from kmart last year (they were better value than big w - but not extendable) - rope light, i think is from big w - the bigger decorations are from deals direct online

damn, was going to share a vid, but it doesn't have a link to publicly share it the way you can with photos..!

That's strange BG re the solar. I had our panels under a bush, as I didn't want to make it obvious that they were solar and they still charged fine.

yeah i'm not sure what happened Kat - but it really put me off getting solar ones
i think i'll buy a timer for the power switch this year - so it will automatically go off rather than whatever random time DH comes to bed. we have the tree on the whole time (and all the lights around DH's bar) so i would like to know they will be off no later than x time..

I'm getting my head around the fact you have lovely warmth and have pretend icicles in the lovely warmth. Why the fake cold? Cold not good.

I have solar lights and they work at this time of year. In a country who once had a month with zero measured sunlight. In a country where we currently have sunset before 5pm - and it's getting earlier. Can't fathom them not working in Australia - not unless they were dodgily wired ones.

We have two trees with lights and some electric candles. DH won't let us have outside lights - maybe because last time my mother did them, she had red lights on the trees leading up to her bedroom window. And you can't buy solar Christmas lights over here for some reason.

Possibly dodgy ones. Possibly had the solar panel in a bad spot. I dunno! It happened. It put dh off solar lights, so we don't use them. Plus I will admit, having total control over them either being off or on appeals. Which you can't control with solar lights...
