Coughing keeping DD awake - suggestions???

The last couple of days and nights DD has had a cough when sleeping which is waking her up (and consequently us). She doesn't want to be awake, she wants to be sleeping, but besides offering her a drink I'm not sure what to do to help relieve it. Once she wakes and starts coughing its usually over half an hour or so before she finally stops and manages to get bsck to sleep. She doesn't seem to be sick when she is awake..... I mean, occasionally I need to wipe her nose, but its nothing much more than usual. Last night I was almost going to give her panadol in the off chance it might help, but she managed to get back to sleep. Does anyone have any other suggestions to ease the coughing???

Is it just a once off or has she had a cough for a while?? My DD got "asthmatic tendencies" (paed's words!) when she got a cold and it meant 12 weeks of coughing at one point in time and we had to use a puffer for her. She's grown out of it now (5 1/2)but we had quite a few times where we had to use the puffer, some Predmix at one point and also some Seretide even though she doesn't actually have asthma. Coughing can be an indicator which is why I was asking if it's something ongoing or just a once off. If it is once off you could try a vaporiser??

Well this is just the second night and day of it, so I wouldn't say it was a trend yet. Thanks for the info though.

She's still coughing....it's been over an hour. I set up the vaporiser about 20 mins ago in the hope it'd help. Hopefully it does soon.

Vaporiser and Vicks on the feet then put socks on. Works a treat here.

is there a breeze going onto her? sometimes that does it.
dd is having this atm too and I've had it heaps before.
try to avoid giving her dairy a few hrs before bed, this stimulates the mucous which causes the tickle.
prop her head/super upper chest on a pillow.
    keep up the water intake
    make the room warm.

that's all I can think of that I do for myself and dd. I give myself nasal decongestants but that's completely different lol.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Once we got past that episode she slept pretty well (except for a bit of a cough at 5am). She seemed fine this morning (once again) so she went to childcare happy as Larry and then I was called to pick her up at nap time cause she was coughing heaps again.... It'll be interesting to see how she goes tonight. She went down quickly (TBH I think she's exhausted from the last few days of interrupted sleeps), but it'll be interesting to see if it lasts...
