    Please help

Hi there Ive just accidently given my nearly 5 month old half a mls of phenurgen (.5mls) and I freaked out and went on google and it said it can be extremely fatal! I am now do so stressed and cannot stop watching him to make sure he's ok and still breathing! Has anyone given their baby phenurgen and it has been ok. He seems fine but I'm freaking out!

    Hi Hoppet,

Why did you give the Phenergan in the first place? Was it accidental (ie. thought it was Panadol) or for another reason? Does your child have any underlying respiratory conditions?

Don't panic, 0.5ml of Phenergan equates to 0.5mg of promethazine hydrochloride and should have no discernible effect on your child. Phenergan is not recommended for use in children under 2 as it can cause respiratory depression, but the dose you have given is very, very small. I expect that you will not see any effect on your child. You should watch your baby for the next couple of hours and monitor his/her breathing, but again - the dose you have given is tiny. If it is your baby's normal sleep time, let him/her sleep. Maybe sit on the couch and snuggle for the next couple of hours? As long as bub's breathing is even and regular (a rate of 20-50 breaths per minute is normal) then everything is ok.

It was a total accident yes I thought it was panadol as it was in the panadol box (I have thrown it away immediately after I realized what it was)

I've just timed his breathing and it's about 38-40 breaths a minute and he's breathing isn't really slow or very fast it's as normal.

I've got him cuddled up next to me as I feel so sick in the stomach that I gave it to him!

I am a good mother and love my baby so please no harsh comments

I'd also suggest calling poisons information or Nurse on call (or the equivalent in your state). I hope your little one is ok. We all make mistakes.

Hoppet, the recommended dose for a 2 year old is up to 15mls. The dose you have given is tiny. Again, I would not expect it to affect your child at all. Keep an eye on him and don't beat yourself up!

Hun, the hospital gave my 3month old nephew a very small dose of phenergan when he had chicken pox. It was under strict medical supervision, but they were happy to give it to him for that. Keep a close eye but I think it will all be okay x

Please don't beat yourself up over this. You have only given a very mild dosage and it will not harm him in any way. As previous advice contact the poisons or nurse on call line just to put your mind at ease!

Thank you ladies, I called the poision line and they said not to stress and to just watch him. So I've been watching him and he is fine (but I'm not sure how ill sleep tonight I can't stop checking on him breathing). I feel like the worst mother in the world and I will never ever let anything like that happen again! All harmful medican is now in the bin or far far away from bubs panadol!
