DS (3 months) is now rolling from back to front. But cannot do front to back. He rolls *all* night long. He seems happy on his tummy. What age is it safe to leave babies to sleep on their tums?
Generally speaking, not until they have mastered the art of rolling both ways. Have you got an Apnoea mat or anything you can use while bubs is sleeping?
Good question! My 5 wk old loves being on his tummy and yesterday we let him sleep like that for a couple of hours. We have a sensor mat and I was always close by as I was a bit paranoid about him sleeping like that, he'd been unsettled all day but sleeping on his tummy have us a much needed break! I reckon ill do it more often but probably not at night. I don't think there's an age as such.
DD was a tummy sleeper as soon as she could roll over, from about 14 weeks. I stopped wrapping her and put her in a sleeping bag and she was happy to sleep like that and stay asleep
All three of my kids have preferred sleeping on their tummy. With my first (my DS) we persisted and kept him sleeping on his back. He's been the most troubled sleeper of the three and I wonder what it would have been like if we had let him sleep on his tummy. Both my girls we let sleep on their tummy. We knew it was not the safest position, but in reality the risk is pretty small. We did it as safely as possible and we also co-sleep. Both girls have been pretty good sleepers and from very early would have long day naps. My youngest is 9 months now and she still sleeps anywhere from 2-4 hour naps during the day (twice a day) and then sleeps pretty well at night too. My 3.5 year old and 2 year old (she turns 2 tomorrow) still sleep on their tummies most of the night, whereas my 9 month old often rolls to her side now.
Forgot to mention that I'm sure I remember my MCH nurse saying that it's pretty safe once bub is able to lift their head and change the side they are looking on their own.
Thanks Mylitta, that's what I thought too. DH is adamant about putting him back on his back. I have 3 month CHN check next week so I suppose I'll discuss it then. He's a good sleeper, usually from 11-5 but the heat coupled with this new discovery is problematic lol
