Hmmm I have pondered the title of this thread for a while.....
DD has been in knickers since boxing day and is doing really well with TT during the day for wees - we've had two accidents so far - but we have also played it pretty low key and been home a lot to get used to it. Anyways, I'm really proud of her!
The thing is, when she goes to the loo, 9 times out of 10, she wees with such force that it shoots straight forward and hits the padded insert. I imagine if the insert wasn't there it may not reach as far as the adult seat, but she won't sit on it without it for fear of falling in. Our routine now is to 'scoot back' on the seat to leave as big a gap as possible, and I do try to get her to lean forward a little but she doesn't like to do that.
I do think she holds on quite a bit so it's quite a 'stream' when she does go, but she gets too upset if I get her to try too often. I thought this was a problem I'd have with a little boy not a girl - weeing all over the seat! I'm constantly cleaning up wee from all over the insert, toilet seat etc. I don't make a big deal of it to her because I don't want it to bother her. She did have a labial adhesion when she was around 3 months old (?) but it cleared up very quickly with a short dose of cream and has not been a problem since. I have started to wonder if that could have had an affect? Or am I just over thinking things?
I'm still really happy with how she's going, I just wondered if anyone else has come across this and if it will probably just settle down eventually.
We are also due back to CC in another week so it will be interesting to see if it happens in their child sized toilets. Thanks in advance for any feedback.
I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe just make sure she takes her undies all the way off and sit at the back of the toilet with legs hanging over sides not towards the front. Teach her to wipe the wee off the toilet seat and then to wash hands.
My DD was doing the same in the beginning and as she an amazing ability to hold on, it comes out with alot of force when she goes. She would sit upright and legs out while holding on to the sides. We don't use the toilet insert as she doesn't like it.
Most of the time she tells me when she needs to go to the toilet so I take her nickers off completely.
I gently encourage her to sink down a bit or put her legs either side of the toilet seat so it creates a down stream rather than forward, if that makes sense. She also like to watch the stream come out, so now she almost creates a lean forward trying to do that.
I think once she gets to CC and sees how other girls go, she will follow suit. It will click eventually.
We have also had the situation of when she wears longer dresses, she has trouble holding the dress up and holding on to the sides and the dress gets wet.
Dd2 was the same, she would wee all over her undies as it would shoot out over th seat! We had to supervise how she sat and make sure she was sitting properly with her bottom slanted in the right direction. It didn't take long to click although sometimes if she has held on for too long and is in a hurry it can still happen. She also has a massive bladder capacity so I think that contributes as well.
I think everyone's urethra is slightly different - or more so the skin around it and so changes the direction that the spray comes out from ikywim. I have had little girls at work who manage to do a spout like a boy right over the edge of the loo! But they all seem to get the hang of it eventually and push the wee out a little slower I suppose.
My DD is the same, we started TT'in on New Years day and she has picked it up really fast but she has the same issue.
We have had time when we have been out and she has had to use the potty we have in the back of that station wagon and to stop her from weeing straight forward all over the floor of the car, I now put a old style cloth nappy over her to catch the spray and then when she is done I bundle it into a plastic bag to bring home and put in the wash.
When she uses the toielt at home though we do get her to sit back as far as possible. I'm hoping that as she learns that she doesn't have to hold on so much that she will go more regularly and then avoid the excessive wees we are getting now.
Ask your friends about when they wee!! I had this conversation with a group of girls after seeing that show... mmm, the one where they took hmmhmmm... ahhh, scrubbers? and turned them in to ladies. Aaahhh ladette to lady??? There was a girl on it who, instead of squatting, stood on her knees to do a wee on the road - it shot out in front of her!! I'd never seen such a thing! But after a (rather boozy) dinner with girlfriends, it seems it's not terribly uncommon. Must be the direction of the urethra, as a PP said. I'd encourage your DD to lean forward when weeing on the loo, it will direct the urethra back a bit and I don't reckon it would interfere with emptying her bladder.
Thanks everyone for your feedback, reassuring to know we're not the only ones to go through it!
Undies always come off completely, and we use one of those seats that goes over the loo seat with two steps attached. Now I look at it I think maybe that stops her from spreading her legs quite wide, so I tried just a normal insert with no steps (so no handles to sit alongside legs) and she freaked lol she is such a creature of habit she hates a change, so we will just go with it for the moment.
She does help wipe the seat and we always wash hands so I guess if we just manage it well when it happens all will be right She did her first poop on the loo today too (YAY!!) and that thankfully went in the right direction
