Best Basic Cake For Holding Shape.

I have some of those silicone shaped cake moulds (bugs, buterflies, hearts... etc) that the kids want to make with their cousins today.

I'd like a really basic (moreso ingredients tha skill level) that will hold shape really well out of those moulds.

I've got all the basics in the cupboard but no chocolate or anything fancy.

Thinking just buttercream icing the kids can pipe on with those little silver balls as deco's.... hmmmmmm

    Make jelly in them!

Otherwise a simple butter cake should hold its shape ok

Jelly is a great idea! I have trouble with the moulds getting the cake out or it rises too much. The first ones I did worked but I can't remember what cake I made.

Don't make the basic butter cake recipe off Taste. ( with 3 eggs). It's truly the driest crumbliest worstest cake I've ever baked. To get jelly out of a mould either dunk it in hot water quickly, or wipe the mould before you put the jelly in with oil.

I think the best buttercake recipe is the one in the original aww birthday cake book. Oh, i hope its not the one from taste! I can post it if you like.

Spray the silicon moulds first with cooking spray - that helps get the cakes out easier.

Sorry ZF. I should have said i didn't have a recipe! I looked that one up last weekend and found it terrible then bizzarely i told a friend whose DD is one week older than my DS and she had made the EXACT same cake and was terribly disappointed too. It specifically says 'good for birthdays' - so an easy trap to fall into!

I'm sure the AWW will be great.
