    Cane toad in dog bowl

For the past two nights I have noticed a cane toad sitting in our dogs bowl. First time the bowl was empty second time it was sitting on a pile of dry dog kibbles. There was also one submerged in his dog water bucket!! Firstly, can they leave there poison on the dog bowl/ food/ water and how do I get them to keep away.

I would throw the food/water out, just to cautious, but I would also ring your vet and ask them. I suspect the only way you could prevent this is by covering food & water at night or bringing it indoors.

To prevent it happening, I think if you empty the food bowl and give it a rinse after your dog eats then the toad would probably stop going there, and if you have a tall drink bowl (we use a bucket) then he shouldn't be able to get into that.

Toads can be fatal to dogs. We almost lost our little Jack Russell back in May - a damn toad was on the lawn in the middle of the day in low humidity/cooler temperatures. Couldn't believe it. I had her at the vets within 40 mins. If I'd been another 5-10 mins later she wouldn't have made it. So I'm uber paranoid about cane toads. I'd definitely throw out anything the toad sat on. I agree about keeping the bowl free of food except for dinner time, and if there's a water bowl alternative it would be worth looking into.

Thanks. We use a happy bucket for water so I am not sure how it got in. We usually let him graze in kibble throughout the day plus it would be s waste of food to throw any unbeaten kibble out so as to keep a clear food bowl. I might have his dry food inside and rinse out wet food bowl so he can still eat that outside. It's made me wonder how many toads are outside jumping around him all night. He sleeps outside. I hope he doesn't try to catch one.

we use a bucket also & I still get them in there, I just toss the water & refill. Same with the dog food. Our dog only gets biscuits & she doesn't eat them all in one go. So there is always several toads about stealing her food. Hasn't bothered her yet. The poison is from glands on their back & when they are under threat so Im not concerned about them being on her food. She doesn't try & attack them so all good.
