    Abnormal bleeding

    Hi there,
Recently I've noticed bleeding during my cycle when I shouldn't be. I'm not pregnant.

It first was noticed during intercourse. Just a small amount making me Think AF would arrive shortly - nothing.
A week later it happened again, more blood this time. 2 days later AF began.
I decided when getting my Pap smear this week to mention it. Dr didn't seem happy about it but said he'd do the smear and see what the results were and if it happened again to go and see him.
After the smear, he showed me that his instruments had blood on them, but assured me it was common.
It didn't hurt and it's never happened before. He said he didn't see anything abnormal during the smear.

As you might imagine, I've got all sorts of things going through my head. I'm scared about what the smear might uncover, but I hate waiting to find out. I'm worried its something sinister. I've never bled during or after intercourse before.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Yes that happened to me recently.

Firstly are you on the pill? If you are and not taking it everyday or at the same time everyday then that can cause spotting/bleeding.

I had an abnormal pap smear result and my doctor thinks that was the cause of my spotting. Anyway to cut a long story short, it was nothing sinister (a benign growth and very tiny) but I did get it lasered off by my OB. I am now on six monthly pap smears to keep an eye on things down there.

Please try not to worry (I know easier said than done!). Its a good sign that your doc didn't see anything abnormal during your smear. Can you ask for your results to be treated urgently? My doc was fantastic as she knew I would worry and I got my results really quickly and then saw my OB only a few days later to get it sorted. Best of luck x

    Abnormal bleeding

I had this and kept having abnormal pap smears too (can't remember terminology something along lines of of not looking normal but not cancerous either) - it was about ten years ago and is funny I don't remember too clearly but I ended up having a procedure done where they took more cells and also did cauterisation (I think they burn away cells or something) - that stopped it and also stopped the abnormal pap smears too. I think they explained it like the cells were just not quite right and so were being irritated more easily. Anyway all good after that although I do wonder whether that procedure contributed to fact I didn't dilate properly with both births. I wish I could remember it more clearly to explain better - the first time was after DTD and I was with DH but on a work trip in Italy the amount of blood looked scary.

    Hugs.

    Thanks for the replies.
I'm not using any contraception the only thing different to this time 12 months ago is that I've been using a menstrual cup. I've never had any pain associated with any of it.
It certainly doesn't seem normal, and I really think it will need further investigation, but I'd prefer to know what I was dealing with. :s

    Thanks again

I now use a cup too, haven't had any problems with that - I would doubt could be from that. Now I think back more about it I was getting spotting a bit not in relation to DTD - I was on the pill at the time, but had been for many years and never previous problems - so it was the combination of that plus the blood after DTD that made me go and get it looked into (I had been having abnormal pap smears for a while so was already on a 6 monthly check cycle).

I had a similar thing that started with a very light spotting after sex, and then had a big irregular bleed in the middle of my cycle. I had already had a pap test that had showed very mild irregualr cells, then I had to wait 12 months to have another which came back all clear. My doctor decided to send me to the gyno just as a added precaution, for a colposcopy (I think that is what it is called) - basically a more extensive pap smear, which also showed mild irregular cells. I had to wait another 6 months which is almost up to have another colposcopy. If it shows irregualr cells again, then my gyno will laser them off.

I am a absolute stress head, so all this time between testing does freak me out. My doctor and gyno are all pretty calm about it, as I have always had regular smears. I also bleed at every pap test, but my doctor puts that down to most likely a very sensitive cervix. I couldn't dtd when pregnant at all because of the amount it would make me bleed. Since going through this, I have spoken to quite a few girls who have had the same results, and have had the laser, including my sister in law. She goes and gets pap tests every 12 months now just to be on the safe side, even though the doctor has given her the all clear and said its ok to get them every 2 years again.

Good luck chick - try not to freak yourself out googling stuff like I did

So I've received a letter from my gp to call to discuss my Pap test results and a note saying its suggested I have another in 12 months time. I'm not too worried. Obviously something a bit different to normal but I know if it was ad I'd be called right away.
Will call tomorrow to get results.

On the plus side I've not experienced the bleeding during intercourse for a few weeks but will keep an eye on things.

ETA minor changes found. Already booked next years appointment.

So I've had some more bleeding that my GP isn't happy with so I've been referred to a OBGYN. GP thinks ill have a colposcopy........
I've googled and heard of them before but it's a bit scary. Hopefully there's nothing too drastic going on.

Oh that sucks Hun. Fingers crossed they find nothing drastic, but that they get to the bottom of what's causing the bleeding. xoxoxox
