I was lying in bed last night, listening to the rain continuing to fall on the roof and the wind bashing against the side of the house and thinking about the tornado warnings and it suddenly occurred to me, I couldn't remember who my insurance policies are with! And more to the point, where I would put my hands on them in an emergency.
So this morning (was tempted to do it at 11.30 last night) I have made a emergency evac pack which now lives in my bedside table. It contains important documents should I need to get out quick and then be able to prove my identity, etc. I have put in:
Birth Certificate
Passport
Copies of all credit cards, medicare, licence and bluecard
Insurance policies for house and car
Super statement
Payslip
Power bill
Disks of photos
I don't get paper bank statements so need to find an online one of those
I keep photocopies of all our cards, passports, driving licenses, birth certificates, insurance documents, prescriptions and medical information along with our duplicate external hard drive full of photos and 2 days worth of clothes, dog food and a preprogrammed emergency mobile phone in a bag by the front door.
The kids know to grab the bag if we're not home (with the dog) and go wherever they get told and to call us so I know where they are.
I have another bag with all the same stuff in it in the car.
It's probably overkill but we got flooded out of our home in England and it was awful.
At the moment I have birth certificates and marriage cert at work in my drawer.
I always keep a disk of photos there, I add a disk every 6 to 12 months
We are a bushfire zone, so I feel better keeping them out of the house the whole time this time of year.
I know my providers (insurance, banks, super etc), plus I get emails from them with bills, reminders etc so I don't need paper copies of those. If need be, the financial planner at our bank knows us and manages our super, so can help with getting any bank stuff done.
I have a plastic sleeve with
Marriage certificate, birth certificates and passports. Plus have almost finished a page with all our life/house/car insurance policy numbers, centrlimk details, drivers license details, superannuation policy numbers, medicare, etc in it with a USB of our photos backed up. Our banking is online as are our utilities
We have a plastic tub in the garage with water, first aid kit, torch, spare batteries, alcohol gel, toilet paper and a blanket. Spare collar and lead for the dog
In an emergency I would need to collect clothing, nappies, the tub and the plastic sleeve of documents/USB/, laptop, toiletries and handbag
A reminder to grab requid medications is a godd idea if anyone in the family needs it
I'm planning on getting a laminated sheet to stick on the tub with a short list of things to get
We also have a pre packed toilety bag with essentials in it
