Would this be a step backwards in toilet training?
DS has been toilet training for 5 months now as we started on Sep 1st, a couple of weeks before he turned 2. He started weeing in the loo on day 2 and doing #2 on about day 10. He's been fantastic with #2's every day since then and will always wee in the loo whenever we take him, especially when we are out and about, which is a huge relief! But when we are at home sometimes and we suggest that he goes and does a wee he often says no. On the other hand he will often take himself for a wee so that is good too.
He's been in cloth pull ups and I've found them wonderful as I haven't had to worry about accidents and wet clothes, especially while we are out of the house and he has enough bladder control where he will do a tiny bit in the pants but not a full wee and then when we take him for a wee we just notice that they are a little wet and put some fresh pants on him.
The backwards step that I'm talking about is that I'm thinking of maybe getting him some regular jocks so that he can feel even more wet if he doesn't go to the toilet but I'd still like him to wear the toilet training pants when we go out of the house. I'm thinking that might confuse him and he might feel like he's being punished when we go out, having to wear the toilet training pants. Even though he currently loves them, he will prefer the new regular jocks if I introduce them. What do you think?
I'm also thinking that I could start the day with his regular jocks and if he wets them then go back to the trainers. He will love the regular jocks as I will get him Chuggington ones so this may be good motivation not to wet them. I'm mindful that this could feel like punishment and that is something that I do not want him to feel as we gentle parent him and don't want any shameful feelings around this transition. Has anyone gone down this track and found that it has worked?
I'd just get rid of the trainers all together and just deal With accidents as they rise. He seems like he's pretty good anyway. I just put a flat cloth nappy on the car seat and change if she wets.
Would this be a step backwards in toilet training?
We just trained our DD, who just turned 2.5 yrs. We put her straight into knickers, on the advice of a friend who's worked as a nanny and done this a lot! We had introduced the concept of the toilet, and have one of those seats with the step and handles built in that sit on the loo. So she had been doing occasional wees on that for about 6 weeks. But from putting her in knickers full time (except nap/at night) in three days she has nailed it! Occasional accidents - I think in 3 weeks she's had two wee accidents at daycare and two as home, mostly when she's distracted.
So I would say put him in jocks and go from there
