A close friend of mines DS just had surgery last night & they've had to remove one of his testes
There was no injury that she knows of, I'm not sure of all the details yet.
Anyone else experienced this? Know anymore about it? I'm waiting to find out what the risk of losing the other one is... I hope there isn't any. If there is, are they able to keep the testes of a 5 year old in case he wants kids one day??
My brother had this happen to him about 4 years ago. Luckily his surgery was able to 'untwist' the testes and he didn't loose either. From my understanding of what the Dr said to us, if you have surgery in addition to fixing the problem while they are there they also make a small incision into something (sorry don't know exactly where or what!) but this will prevent further twists making it very very unlikely that this could ever happen again. Four years on and my brother has never had any trouble and is happy and healthy. Hopefully this will be the case for your friends DS!
my brother had the same thing happen quite a few years ago now, luckily he didnt lose either but it was a close call.... he had been writhing around on the couch for hours, mum thought he was just putting it on so he didnt have to go to school (very much, the boy who cried wolf! lol) but when he was actually crying from the pain of it, mum took him to emergency and they took him straight in for surgery..
he had some thing done as a pp said that makes it highly unlikely to happen again...
What an aweful thing to happen. I'm very sorry to hear poor little darling.
Once upon a time I worked as a theatre nurse and saw this several times a year. Its called Torsion of the testicle by memory. From my experience the testicle usually is removed. TBH I haven't seen any saved but have heard of boys that have had them saved. Maybe because alot of boys that had the problem came from an outlying area so by the time they got to our hospital to be operated on the blood supply had been cut of for to long. I also didn't see any that lost both. Most of the boys were older around the 10-15.
As for saving sperm I think that at 5 the sperm thats there would be far to immature to save and result in a baby IYKWIM. The biggest concern would be saving libido and I would imagine regardless of where he is at the medical staff would do everything in there power to keep his other testicle. For both growth and libido.
Yeah 1 can work just as good as having 2 but when you have none your libido is none existant. Then if you have none as a child you need growth hormones (same if a girl is missing her ovaries they will never develop breasts etc)
There are things that can be done for men without testicles to mainain a sexual relationship but the desire is not there apparently. Obviously if a young boy was to loose both they need hormones also once they reach a certain age as they will be feminine looking and don't develop like the rest of their peers. Obviously fertility is a massive concern but I think for a young man saving future Libido is even more important. I really hope he will make a full recovery from this and it not effect him in anyway.
