hi there, I am just after some information on pain stop in infants. I DO NOT use it and WILL NOT use it but my SIL is for her almost 9 month old for teething. He is getting it at night. He has already had health problems, meningitis, bronchioitis and pneumonia and I am worried what this could do.
Thank you for any information.
Ai! It contains codeine - which can suppress breathing and is habit forming (as well as potentially toxic, particularly in someone so small). Maybe you could ask if she has spoken to doctor about using it? Sounds like he's had a really rough time already
Painstop was given to our bub at 6 months old after the pain relief from major surgery had worn off and we were given a script to fill which we did and take home to use for the next 24 hours. This was from the Melb Royal Childrens Hospital. It is safe for bubs to have but there would be quite strict guidelines for reasons to use it and teething wouldn't be one of them. Does she have a script for it? You couldn't buy it over the counter when we used it.
We used it under strict guidance from our gp when ds was getting four molars at once at 12 months and couldn't have nurofen with his reflux. It wasn't something l liked using but he was in agony. I would be questioning the usage above at 9 months for regular teething, nurofen, panadol etc should be fine.
I agree, it has it's uses. We were given it for ds when he twisted his ankle in the cot as he can't have antiinflammitories due to being on warfarin. The Warfarin also made the ankle swell more than it would normally so what would be a single panadol dose and a hug in a normal child was 5 days in hospital and regular pain relief for him. As long as she's using it under strict drs orders, it is fine under 2. Having said that though we would never give him the painstop night formula. He just gets the day formula.
Thank you so much everyone, I was quite worried. She is a student nurse so knows the dangers etc but she just got it OTC and doesn't have the okay from her GP. I feel better knowing that some kids were okay with it though. I am a massive worry wart. My dd is teething at the same time and miserable but nurofen, panadol and lots of cuddles are getting her through.
We were given a script for pain stop by our GP for teething at 14 months after cycling panadol and nurofen was failing to give him any relief and he'd screamed himself hoarse from the pain. It certainly has it's uses but I wouldn't want to use it long term or without consulting a doctor first.
The other thing she'd need to watch is codeine can cause constipation. She'd need to make sure bub is drinking a lot and if eating solids (dicey with really problematic teeth I know) having plenty of fibre.
I would be very concerned about long-term codeine use, basically anything longer than a couple of days, particularly in a baby.
It really worries me that it's so easily available. I am very sensitive to this as my brother was addicted to codeine.
MadB. I'm so sorry to hear that. So terrible!!! I am very cautious about giving Charlie pain stop as he had 8 weeks on morphine and methadone so I don't like giving him codeine. However, like all drugs, it has its uses. Charlie can't have nurofen or any teething gels so Panadol is all we have available unless drs approve pain stop. I haven't found a need to use it for teething yet and won't unless its really bad. I agree with you though. Anything more than a couple of days use is too much!
