Smash Cakes

i saw a 'treasure' cake once but now i can't find it. can't remember if it was here or somewhere else. i think it had some kind of chocolate dome on top and then the kid smashes it to find 'treasure' (lolies) inside. does anyone know the one i am talking about?

I thought smash cake was something different? I thought it was a pinata cake, aww have one in a cake book, and better homes and gardens have one too (from their show, so I think it will be on their site).

Smash cakes are a shape (dome, cupcake, whatever) made from chocolate with lollies hidden underneath.

Some people also call those small cakes they give babies to "play with" (usually for photos) smash cakes, but I've always know smash cakes as the what I mentioned above.

Also if you google smash cake the first page that comes up is the dome chocolate kind!

Moved this here to make it easier. Sarah (Member ex mod) made one of these recently for her DS's birthday. It had the cake underneath then she coated a large bowl in chocolate and froze it and then popped the set chocolate out. It looked amazing. She even covered the outside with m&m's.

I made one of these once.
It was a ***** to make but DS loved it.

You just make a cake and ice it a bit and to make it a bit more special you can hollow the top out and put M&Ms and gold coin chocolate thingies in it.
Then there is the annoying bit - you need a bowl and melted chocolate and to coat the inside of the bowl with chocolate but of course it all wants to slide down to the bottom so you have to swirl the mother ****ing ***** thing for ages and turn it upside down or the top (which will be the weight bearing bottom) will be super skinny and fragile. Of course when you turn it upside down chocolate will go all over the ****ing floor and the stupid dog will want to give itself chocolate poisoning so you have to put the bowl down and chase the dog away and then all the ****ing chocolate slides back to the bottom of the bowl and solidifies. So then you have to bash it out of the bowl and temper it again and repeat the whole freaking process except that when you put the dog out you stepped in the chocolate that fell on the floor and got it everywhere so you need to mop that up first. Eventually you'll get it all coating the bowl. Not evenly, but what the hell, no-one will ever see the inside of the bowl so you pop it away to solidify.
Then you need to turn it out bit the ****ing ***** thing won't budge so you try melting the outside a bit with a bit of boiling water but of course the ****ing water is hotter than a thousand ****ing suns so it melts a hole in it and you have to start all over again even though you have cleaned most of the chocolate off the floor and bench tops.
Second time round you get a bit wiser and use a hot tea-towel on the bowl and give it a smart bang to get it out which breaks the all stupid fragile edges off because you didn't swirl it to the top enough.
Third time or maybe it was the 4th or 5th time it came out perfectly.
Then it takes about an hour to stick the bloody M&Ms and mini M&M's to it.

And DH wondered why I didn't want to eat it.

Oh man. Gold. Pure gold. I have had moments like that. But hey I think after that I would have been shoving my way through to the cake so I could smash it in the end. Lol!
