All that happened a week ago with DS17 getting assaulted my boys have become closer than they ever have been. DS14 was so concerned for his brothers safety and I think he was left feeling a little helpless. He would say things like "I wish I was older to help protect my brother", one night DS17 went out with some friends and DS14 was asking me "who's he with", "who's bringing him home" etc. I told DS17 the things his brother was saying to me and it really touched him. A few days ago DS17 took his brother fishing (he usually goes with mates or on his own) and DS14 was wrapped. They spent hours together and the stories DS14 told me had me in fits of laughter, he had the best time with his big brother, it just takes the bad away for a little while.
