getting a 5 week old to take a dummy

    How do you do this??
This is my second child and we never used one for our first. He gags, spits it out, gets frustrated by it. But sometimes will take it. Would a different brand help?

Some babies just won't take a dummy, ds loved his but prefers some shapes to others if he was upset we would put in his mouth and tap the end of it with fingernail to distract him
But don't force it if he is choking

Maybe try a few brands- my DD flat out refused a dummy until she was about... Actually I can't remember when but she did take one eventually and then would only ever take a particular type and brand. We never forced it and just gently offered it to her a few times a week in different moments- when she was wakeful, sleepy, playtime etc. we let her hold it, play with it, look at it. One night she was very sleepy, in the cradle hold in my arms, but wouldn't quite settle (she often cried before going to sleep) and I spontaneously offered the dummy and she took it. It took a few weeks of offering though.

That said lots of babies refuse a dummy point blank and will never take one.

DD didn't like them, then I tried again at three months to try to stop her screaming in the car and she happily took it

DS (15 weeks) will not take the big round type dummy and gags on it but will sometimes accept the smaller orthodontic shaped ones when he is super tired.

I agree try the orthodontic shape. Also get rubber as some babies prefer that texture more like a nipple. Google pure latex soothers and follow links to make-u-well they are chemical free dummies and they are awesome!

The Pigeon dummies are quite small so good for tiny mouths.
