    Glandular Fever/ Hives

8 weeks ago my 5 year old daughter was very sick with a fever, sore throat, fatigue, swollen glands, etc. At the time the doctor just said it was a run of the mill infection and gave us antibiotics in case it didn't clear up on its own, the prescription for which we didn't fill as she started recovering.

A few weeks after that she started getting hives, which have been getting worse and worse. I eventually took her to the GP last week (6 weeks of student placement on top of work and uni meant I didn't have the time or energy to worry about it) and blood tests have shown she has had glandular fever. There's no way to test when she had it but from the history it seems like it was 8 weeks ago when she was so ill.

I'm just wondering if anyone else's child has had hives following GF and when they settled down. She is on zyrtec twice a day which is calming the itch but she still gets big blotches all over the face, body and arms almost constantly and it would be good to have some sort of a timeframe. The doctor has said 3 more weeks of zyrtec and then a review but I'd love to hear from someone whose child has been through this.

Just to add I had noticed her hives were in strange patterns, and I decided to test the theory that they were being caused by touch so I wrote the word TEST in large letters on her back, very gently with a headphone jack. 2 minutes later it was massive, red and raised on her back. She thinks this is very cool and wants me to write "Scarlett loves Taylor Swift" on her back 2013-05-26 13.25.18.jpg

Hehe do the Taylor Swift for her Poor munchkin.

I had GF when I was 15. I had what they thought was shingles a few weeks later. I can't really remember exactly how long I had them (about a month I think). May have be different to what Scarlett has though, mine were only on my chest.

Hers are mainly on her chest No.5, it's very reassuring that yours lasted about a month. They look shingly so it might be the same thing.

I never got the rash when I had GF, but a friend did. A month sounds about right.

Hope she's not as sick as I was. That wasn't fun

I don't remember getting a rash or hives when I had GF, but then again I was only 6! About the only thing I remember is feeling really tired & hot, and going to hospital. I was in for a couple of weeks.

I've heard of getting hives after a high fever. My niece had a really bad fever with an virus late last year. About a week or so after getting over it, that is without having a fever or any other symptoms, she suddenly flared up in this hideous rash head to to toe. A very speedy trip to the hospital confirmed that it was a reaction to the fever and that it does happen. She was put onto antihistamines to help clear it up.

I had GF at 12 & DD2 had it at 4. It does stay in your system coming back on you for years after, so its very possibly related. Neither DD or I had hives or a rash though.

But I have had DS in hospital as a baby & after his viral fevers & lethargy cleared up he did break out in a rash on his feet. I was told it was just the virus working its way through his system. Maybe this is similar? But that whole 'test' thing is really odd

Hope you did the Taylor Swift thing :P

Thanks everyone I did do the Taylor Swift thing . She is getting a bit better because she is not touching her face as much so it doesn't look as horrendous. Time will tell I guess. I've booked her in for her 2nd MMR soon so hoping the hives won't make that harder on her system, I just want to get it done before I have no choice other than the MMRV.
