DH and I are thinking that we might take the boys to see the barrier reef.
We want to stay somewhere that we can walk to the beach and snorkel rather than having to take a boat to see the reef - so probably an island?
Where is a good place/island/town where we can do this? Family friendly, affordable, maybe with baby sitting in case DH and I want so adult time.
That'll have to be one of the islands. I grew up in NQ and did visit the reef a few times, but always needed a boat trip to get there (we stayed at beaches on the mainland).
I'm not sure how good the snorkelling is right off the beaches on any of the islands, but don't go in the rainy season. Affects the colours of the coral if there's a lot of rain. Plus, stingers/jellyfish are a hazard.
I'm really looking forward to taking my family up one day. It is truly amazing to see.
There is lots of great snorkling of Fitzroy Island - we stayed there years ago (probably 15 years ago and the Island was lovely, the resort has since been completely redone which is good as it was a bit tired back then. Its looks luxurious now, I want to go!! Its off Cairns (45mins) too so lots to do in that region but you could happily just holiday on the Island without needing to leave
Lots of stuff for kids to do, cimema, games room, awesome pool and beach!
