Applying to have income assessed as an earlier year

Hello, this is a bit of an unusual one, so I thought I would ask as a bit of a litmus against what they say when I ring later this week.

Back in 2009-10 fin year I had a significant illness. At the time I applied for leave without pay @ work, when I was actually entitled to take sick leave. (Difference of several thousand dollars over the space of a year). Fast forward a couple of years & I realized what happened & I applied to have those entitlements reinstated. They processed all the adjustments (mostly relating to leave) and I got a small lump sum. Because it related to a previous fin year (ie, money that I "earnt") 2009-10 not 2011-12 that sum was supposed to appear at E on my group certificate, but it wasn't. So I had to get a letter & the tax office has finally made the adjustment.

SO - this is my question: now that the tax office has adjusted my tax to recognise that the income was associated with a previous fin year, is there any way to get a similar back casting done at the Centrelink end? The year when I should have paid that money I earnt nothing, but during 2011-12 that sum has just pushed my income over the upper threshold for FTB part B. It hardly seems fair, given the horrible & lasting financial impact that my illness had.

If ato have reassessed the two ears in question, that information will be sent to fao and will also be reassessed. It may take a while but it will be done. Just keep in mind you may (probably will) receive a debt for 09/10, and any debt that has come in the 11/12 year will be removed

Thanks, BG. See that's the thing. I'm not 100% sure that the way that the ATO treats it flags it as income against an earlier year, or whether they've just adjusted my tax refund without sending that info on to Centrelink. Not having a high level of faith right now in whether the pertinent info actually changes hands (since the ATO managed to fluff it the first time we submitted the application).

Get them to reissue you a notice of assessment for the relevant years. Once you get them, if it hasn't been reassessed by fao within a few weeks, you can contact and get fao to establish the link manually with the reference numbers on those notices

Fwiw, before e, I had to fight for a redundancy for about two years. When it was finally paid, ATO basically said it was tax free. I can't remember the reason, something to do with it being compensatory or something, so something like that may happen. Hence me saying to get the notices to see exactl what they've done...

Wow. Good to hear a happy ending. I will follow those steps & see what happens.
