In our daycare centre the toilets are open plan (i.e 3 toilets in the one room).. Is he after privacy maybe?
Well, so my delightful 3yo has done one poo in the playground at childcare behind the cubbyhouse. On Thursday he attempted it again but was thwarted in his plans. He has, however, done a wee there as well.
He knows that poos go in the toilet and is really good at home and when we are out and about. And, he's usually really good at childcare.
On the first occasion, DH was away. He is also away at the moment.
I am hoping that it's something related to that and, not some I'll crap where I please attitude that he's suddenly developed.
On the first occasion, I saw the positives (as did one of his carers who lived on large acreage who understood that sometimes you can't make it all the way back to toilet) that he took off his pants to go and didn't do it in his pants and then went and told a carer. I thought, at the time, that it was an urgent I can't make it. One of the carers went OTT and made such a song and dance that I think that in some part DS thought that it was a great way to get attention. I think she could have handled it a little better.
On Thursday, another carer sprung him as he was making an attempt and took him to the toilet. She said she spoke to him about it and he understands that "poos go in the toilet" and he even said, I don't poo in the playground.
We've had numerous discussions about poos and I do know that he gets it all.... I just wanted to know if there was anyone else out there who has/had a child who chose to poo in such an inappropriate spot! I need to know that I'm not the only one - terribly embarrassing and all that!!

My gf son did this and we think that it was because he didn't want to miss out on anything that all the kids were doing, so pooed outside where all the kids were, then could just keep playing with the kids!. It was sorted pretty quick with the 'poos go in the toilet' etc... I don't think it is an attitude issue with your son, he'd be doing other things I think if that were the case.
My DD did one on the floor of a cafe, about a week ago. So incredibly embarrassing. I think it was just coming and she didn't really know what else to do.
Oh Luna, I love you!! Thank you for your post. I guess you probably wanted the floor top open up right then and there, but thank you for sharing your experience!
I'm thinking that it is a "don't want to miss out on anything" thing. He took himself off to the toilet all weekend - even stopping mid-play to go poos (in the toilet) I didn't ask him once to go, it was all self-initiated.
Just to make you feel a bit better my cousin who was in his first year of school did a poo in the classroom.
