So our church runs a baby market thing every few months.
Typical kind of gig - you pay your $40 or whatever for a stall, you bring all the toys and clothes etc that your kids no longer fit or use, and you do your darndest to flog them (or bring your wares, if you make stuff).
Have you ever done it?
Was it worth it?
I have a horrible feeling that while I can look at my MCNs and think of what they're worth, others may be disgusted by the thought of buying second hand nappies ...
And while clothes are a good thing tto get second hand - particularly baby stuff, as it's worn for approximately 45 seconds three times before it's grown out of - a $30 pumpkin patch outfit might only get a few dollars ... then I need to do it another 10 times to just get the table space money back ... and I've wasted a whole day, not including pulling it all out and loading up the car ...
I did poorly with the one I attended (which was a big annual one) For some reason that year girls clothes barely sold. People were after boys clothes and toys. Also tried to sell a cot with not luck, but previous years cots sold without a problem.
The lady I was sharing the table with sold a lot of toys in the first hour, she had attended the previous year and the clothes sold that year.
So really it is hit and miss as to what will sell
Can you talk to some others at your church who have sold there to get feel of what it is like?
I've only ever attended them - the only person I know who has had a stall did quite well, but she works in fashion and was selling very good quality, trendy little person clothes.
The only very good quality, trendy little person clothes I would be selling is the stuff I bought from her
Does your church have initials NHBC ? I did a stall there a couple of years back and barely made money back. It wasn't directly with church though was an All for Kids one, was maybe in October. Toys sold ok but was only after a dollar, people weren't interested in clothes really, people who did well were the handmade or designer from Europe stalls.
If you have a big item that will cover the stall fee can be worth it but otherwise I think have to sell too much to cover costs.
Carribean gardens (scoresby) have one that only costs 5 dollars and they take everything left to charity shops if you like. It is a Friday though.
I did one a few years ago at the Baby & Kids Market, back when I thought we were stopping at 2. We had a cradle, swing/rocker thing, heaps of clothes, smaller toys, wraps/blankets and about 40 MCNs (greenkids). My nappies sold literally within 10 minutes of the market opening and I could have sold them a dozen times over. Basically I sold everything except for probably half the clothes. I had decent to higher end stuff priced what I thought was reasonably ($1-$5 per piece for most things) but brought most of it home and then gave it to Good Sammies. I don't remember exactly how much we made, but it was close to $2K so well and truly worthwhile
If you don't want to do a market there is a pretty good second hand market on various facebook pages for MCNs
I have done markets but I've found eBay and the buy swap
Sell pages on FB better for getting your money's worth. You can have things prices for a few dollars at the markets and ppl will still try and get it cheaper.
