Every time my dd has a swim she will do a runny poo afterwards and then be fine. It's not a once in a while thing either. It happened all last summer and has started again since she's been back swimming again this season. Should I follow this up with gp or is it just one of those things?
She's 4 now. We got the pool when she was 2 but I distinctly remember it happening last summer when she was 3. I asked her if she is swallowing water and she said she did one time but has said no since. It's a salt water pool and all the levels are fine.
Exercise can stimulate bowel movements - swimming is a pretty whole-body form of exercise. If it was any more than one bowel movement each time, then probably more of a point of concern. But if it's self-limiting then I guess it may just be normal? But if you're worried, trust your mummy instinct and by all means mention it next time you're at the GP.
I remember having the most atrocious tummy pain and runny poo after swimming when little, it was due to swallowing lots of water, once I got the hang of swimming and didn't swallow water anymore, I never had another issue. Maybe it's that?
This happens to DD too. We have had a couple of times where she has been in real discomfort and had some explosive movements..... Doc took a sample and nothing came up. But almost everytime she goes swimming we hear 'I've got a sore tummy' followed by a bout of the runs. We got to the stage where we couldn't make any plans on swimming night (a Friday) because we needed to be near a toilet. DD is an awesome little swimmer and doesn't swallow any water. It happens at different pools too - at least 4 of them so it's not a pool specific issue.
She's started swimming again after the winter and although the sore tummy is still there, I don't think we've had the runs. She's 6 now.
I would say its because she is drinking the water too. Dd1 vomited very week after swimming until she was 4 and old enough to understand that drinking the water was causing it. We had to dash home so she was sick at home not in the car.
