    umbilical hernia

just wondering if any one has experienced an umbilical hernia?

I think mine has been caused by weakened tummy muscles, a large dram in pregnancy, and possibly carrying a large baby.

did you have treatment/surgery? did it help?

I have one that hasn't been treated yet. I have a referral to a surgeon but have been waiting until my youngest was a little less reliant on breast feeding before I looked at getting fixed. My understanding from my OB and GP is that I will need surgery to repair

Does yours affect you much now? Did it improve at all after your baby was born?

I will also be breastfeeding, and will want to lose some pg weight before surgery (if needed), but also don't want to wait forever.

If i knock my tummy, or the kids do, i almost jump through the roof. the pain is quite intense.

The pain improved heaps after DD2 was born. I found it was at its most painful at around 20 weeks pregnant and then once the top of my uterus passed it the pain was more bearable. I don't find it nearly as painful now it just looks terrible! My tummy still looks slightly preggie even though I have lost most of baby weight. The extreme outie just makes it look like there is something still cooking. I am going to get off my butt and get it fixed!

    Hi Janie

If you are on FB, someone asked about hernias and pregnancy, and got many replies including from women who had them repaired.

    Hi,

I've just started a rehab program to close the 5cm gap in my tummy muscles. I remember sitting in bed a day or two after DS2 was born and something protruding up through the gap and I was thinking what the?? Wore a tubie grip thing and it went down. Anyway, the pilates instructor I saw yesterday was measuring the gap at different points and said that she could feel where it was starting to herniate a bit. I'm wearing a splint and doing Tubler technique exercises for the next few months to close the gap. I had 3 kids in 4 years and the boys were big ones (4.1 & 4.7kgs). If you look up The Belly Firm online, you can read more about it. The exercises might be useful for after surgery, to make sure that it doesn't happen again. I did a 1 hr consult and paid for the splint (in Macedon). Not sure if you've been told that you have to have surgery or whether this program would help? Might be worth giving them a call as see what they can suggest?
