What is it you're wanting to do in Newcastle? Also, who will be there? Will there be kids?
That would help with choosing somewhere to stay.

Is it Newcastle itself you want to stay at? Anna bay is really nice and so is Nelson bay. What kind of accommodation are you after?

We are looking to go for a cheap holiday for 3days. Plans were just to go to the beach really (its a novelty when the closest one is almost 500kms away) Happy to spend around $150-$200 a night for a room. My only wishes are it has air con and a pool for the kids.
We would like to stay in Newcastle as we have a friend we will be seeing, want to head to the shops and be within 20 odd minutes to Nobby's and that other beach around the corner from it

We stayed in Nelson bay last year, $570 for 5 nights at Côte d'Azur ... Coles is on the corner, 2bedroom BIG apartment! Pool too. Walking distance to everything!

Mildez! Let me tell you some names of the most famous and beautiful Hotels near New Castle:
    Staybridge Suites Newcastle
    Hotel Indigo Newcastle
    The Vermont Hotel
    Jesmond Dene House
Hotel du Vin & Bistro Newcastle
    Sleeperz Hotel Newcastle
    Royal Station Hotel
    Malmaison Newcastle
Think that may just be the wrong Newcastle

I second the Nelson Bay area but it is a bit of drive in to Newcastle, from memory 45 minute - an hour. We have stayed at Noah's on the Beach, which is right near Nobby's, but no pool (that we found) and rooms were small with kids. It was more of an overnight trip than a 'holiday', so to speak.
