    After hours dr or wait???

I'm on day 4 of abs but my throat infection seems worse. One side is how so swollen it's touching the dangly thing in the back of my throat it's so painful and so annoying trying to swallow but it's all sticking together

My crazy morning morning irrational and tired fear is my throat is closing up given the swelling but my rational head is saying for be stupid.

I'd say that if the ABs were going to work they would have definitely kicked in by now - I'd be back to the GP today, but I probably wouldn't bother with the after hours GP unless you were totally freaking out.

ABs should start working after 24 hours. If it is day 4, then I would go back to the GP. I would only use the after-hours if I was in a lot of pain.

    Hope you get better quickly.

Fell back asleep at about 5.30 out of pure total exhaustion I think... I went to bed about 8pm....

Heading back to the dr this morning. Unfortunately my own dr is on hols and it appears the medical centre near me that is open has dodgy drs at the best of times..... Don't have much choice unfortunately

Definitely go get it checked out. Sounds very similar to what my boss was describing about his young adult daughter who ended up on 3 days of iv antibiotics..

Hope it isn't that serious, but he told me they thought it was tonsillitis, but she was saying her throat felt like it was closing which was their cue to head to hospital..

Re: After hours dr or wait???

The dr I saw this morning seems to think its tonsillitis even though I had my tonsils out when I was 16. When I questioned it her response was that they may have only taken part of it want to cry now. I've felt like crap since Christmas Day. I've been gargling salt water, lonzenges, dare I say it - shots on alcohol anything I can to stop it.

Hopefully this new antibiotic and prednisone will help

If this is what it is I really will cry!! I've done enough antibiotics etc for tonsillitis!!!

It sounds pretty severe to be tonsillitis, especially if you've had them out and four days of ABs have done nothing. Instead of salt water, get Betadine sore throat gargle, it's anti-bacterial and anti-virus, so does a lot more than just salt.

Oh you poor thing! That sounds horrendous. Get those new medications into you and if you aren't better in 24 hours get yourself to an ED. Are you taking some pain relief as well?

Honestly, I would be going to emergency if you are in as much pain that you seem to be from your posts.

There is a chance the change in antibiotics will work, but I wouldn't be risking the symptoms getting worse. I know from previous posts of yours you seem to push through a lot of pain, so it must be a bad infection for you to be in this much pain.. You will know if it is a pain that you just ignore and get on with, or if it needs further investigation..

Re: After hours dr or wait???

I'm only having panadol as I'm allergic to aspirin and codeine

I'm going to give it until the morning with a change in meds and see how it goes. The ab they have me this morning is the same one I used to have when I had tonsillitis (5 years on and off of abs I remember them well!)

Will see how it goes, otherwise it may be off to ed for some iv abs (which again I remember all too well...)

Thanks girls... I'm being a big sook today. Just feeling sorry for myself. I really wanted to do fun stuff with the girls while I've been off - instead they have been entertaining themselves with tv, drawing and new toys because I can't do the things with them I wanted

Are you able to take Nurofen? That will help with the inflammation of the throat (providing it doesn't have a reaction to the antibiotics).. If you can use Nurofen normally, check with the chemist if ok with your other medications..

BS sounds awful. Last time I had a nasty throat I got a lot of relief with hot/warm water with some manuka honey stirred through - small sips only & leave out the lemon (that's some nasty form of torture invented by people who have never known a "real" sore throat). It seemed to help soothe that swollen feeling.

Re: After hours dr or wait???

When I had tonsillitis really bad and I couldn't swallow as they were touching, they gave me a type of steroid to relieve the swelling. It took less than 24 hrs for them do go down and I could finally get some fluid in. Just in time that I didn't need to go to hosp.
They don't usually prescribe it, only for severe cases.

I really hope the new AB's start clearing it up!

I can completely vouch for honey for pain relief too. Even DD1 asks for it now. Tonsils can grow back but I wouldn't have thought it would be so severe. Hope you feel better soon.

Yeah they only take 70% sadly i found out from a ENT specialist after having mine out then getting continous infections after. What antibiotics did you get? I hope they start helping and you start feeling better soon. Huge hugs xx

    Aw hun.

It sounds like you need steroids. As your Dr, or yeah, get one of the home visiting ones if you can get them out during the day (since it's holiday-ish)...

I had that awful closing up feeling, where my epiglottis was kind of getting pushed forwards because my throat was so swollen. It was awful, and I felt like I was choking the whole sodding time.

Get back to the Dr - another Dr if this one isn't listening to you.

Write out all the different symptoms, headache, dry skin, fever, whatever is going on, and give it to the Dr.

I really hope you get well soon xx
