What does it mean when...?

I'm sure the answer to this is easy but what does a job advertised as part time working 38hrs *per fortnight* mean? does it mean you only work every second week for 38hrs :?

It would mean 38 hours over 2 weeks.

It would mean that they do their rosters a fortnight at a time, and pay a fortnight at a time probably, so you will do 38 hours over those two weeks. How the hours are distributed would depend on their shifts, your availability, etc.

Mum worked 2 days one week, 5 days the alternative week.

There could be all sorts of combos, some regular, others irregular hours.

I work 38 hours a fortnight and for me it is 9am - 3pm 3 days on the 1st week and 4 days on the second.
