There's a big chance we will have to live in Thailand for a short period (3 or 6 months) at the end of the year for Dhs work. It will be in Pattaya where apparently all the expats are. Anyone done this? any tips.
I've been to Thailand before when I was a young backpacker and travelled round India by myself so I'm used to the noise/smell/etc parts of Asia. Will be different with a child though, although we will obviously be staying in nicer accommodation that I did! Should be a good adventure for dd though.
Yes, although I lived in Bangkok. Busy, nice people & one of the few places I felt comfortable walking around & travelling in taxis alone. Bit of corruption around, ie stopped in traffic by police for no reason & you pay a small fee & they let you go again. Happened a lot with other expats we knew. We found that as a culture they love children, so expect your dd to get a lot of attention! My little sister was young when we moved there & she got plenty! : )
My FIL lives in pattaya. We went there and I wasn't a fan of the place. He owned a bar there. there were lots of 'working girls' and ladyboys and it wasn't a lifestyle I would choose for my kids to be exposed to. FIL had two kids living in the bar with them, and they know no different.... They were happy kids though. Tbh though it might just be part of that scene.... I'm not sure what life there would be like out of it.
I'm all for travelling/working overseas. We lived in Singapore and in the Channel Islands and were away for 4 years. Definitely an experience to be had. It made me appreciate home a whole lot more.
Thanks Yules, just found out it would actually be an hour out of Pattaya in Rayong, seems a bit quieter and better beaches.
I certainly wouldn't be hanging around the seedy area of Pattaya, especially with a child, due to the type of men attracted to the area. I'm sure there's nicer areas too.
