Adenoid and turbinate reduction VS allergy treatment
Don't know what to do re my 11 year old DD and have had some great advice here before so would love some opinions. Dd had a dust mite allergy diagnosed mid last year after a year of constant sniffing and increased number of "colds". We tried cortisone spray in her nose and antihistamines but they don't do much. She is taking drop under her tongue to desensitise against the allergy.
Late last year and through march and April this year she has had weeks off school due to acute sinusitis. Today we went to an ENT specialist who put a camera up her nose. It was amazing and I could see one part of her nose is completely blocked as the turbinate is resting on the septum (which is a little deviated) and one adenoid is large and inflamed and producing heaps of mucous, hence the sniffing and coughing up stuff every morning. So he wants to reduce the size of the adenoid and turbinate by basically "shaving" them and then cauterising to stop the bleeding. it is done under general anaesthesia.
Anyone have any experience with this?? If it was me I would have it done but why is it so scary to make thaw decisions for our children???
Oops forgot to say we could persist with the allergy treatment as it might still reduce their size but today DDs symptoms were really minor. She was having a good day but still the things were enlarged so not sure if the allergy treatment are that effective.
Adenoid and turbinate reduction VS allergy treatment
There's nothing that says you have to make a decision right this instant. I know allergies can be awful to live with, but I also know they are a "total load" thing too. Have you tried any other measures to keep the allergen levels down - ie - removing curtains & carpets in her bedroom, shifting to low allergen mattress covers, pillows, etc. check if you have the best vacuum cleaner too. Have you tried getting her to use a simple saline spray or rinse like sinoclear? The rinse is more concentrated and works quite well, and because it's just salty water, you can use it alongside the other allergy treatments. And finally if she has dairy, think about trialling the A2 products & see if that makes a difference (I can't believe how many things I can smell and hear since I started using the A2 stuff, congestion is gone). And if you've tried all of that holistically for a month or two and she's still suffering, then it's time to think about a surgical intervention.
Re: Adenoid and turbinate reduction VS allergy treatment
I had my adenoids done at three with my tonsils and then my turbinates and sinuses shaved three years ago but I am still having lots of infections and allergic reactions.
Re: Adenoid and turbinate reduction VS allergy treatment
My son had his adenoids out when he was 2 then when he was 4 he had them out again and also had the cautery of turbinates. He still snores of a night time but seems to breath easier and finds it easier to clear his nose (he doesn't get all blocked up now as the mucus flows easily).

Thanks ladies.
MD, we have done almost everything to rid the house of dust but it is a lOsing battle. I think there is something really aggravating her in our house but I can't work out what! Back a few years ago when she was well, she had a friend stay over a few times and the friend was asthmatic. I remember this girl would turn uP at our house well and within a few hours be wheezing and coughing. One night I had to take her home and she ended up in hospital!
Dd is really bad at the moment so leaning toward the operation.
Black rose, that is not good it didn't help you.
