Excema. My 11yo has it around the urethra. Steroid cream helps. Talk to your GP.
Hi knowledgeable ones,
DS1 has been TT since 3 (he's two weeks shy of 4 now), he didn't want to but then one day just before his 3rd bday he started crying that his penis hurt, we suspected UTI and took him to the GP, who asked for a wee sample (of urine.. lol.. sorry...), at which point I realised DS1 could wee on cue and I suggested maybe undies would help his sore penis as they wouldn't rub so much. So he agreed, into undies, TT day. Night followed about two weeks later. Penis seemed a little red on the tip but nothing else that I could see. He's not circumsized.
Anyway, GP did the wee dip stick test (with a small stick.. SORRY!!!) and negative for UTI. He sent it off for analysis just in case, we gave him some oral ABs and all seemed fine.
Since then, a few times he has said his penis hurts. Randomly will cry out and say his penis hurts. Not as bad as the first time and we haven't been back to the GP. But this week it has seemed to be more sore than not. Doesn't seem to hurt when he urinates, just other random times. Little bit red.
What should we do? Back to the GP? Leave it?
I need some wise words - DH is telling me we should have gotten him circumsized, that this would never be happening if we'd had him circumsized![]()

Would not have considered that. Thanks Div.
Could be eczema or dermatitis. This can happen circ'd or not.
Wash with salt water and cool camomile tea when it hurts. Works wonders for cleaning things up and you can do that straight away. A doctor told me this and it does work.
At what ages does the foreskin retract easily? I'm wondering if it could be related to a tight foreskin.
FL from what I've read it is sometime between 3 and 5 - I've wondered similar.
He just woke up crying saying his penis hurts. He sleeps like a log usually - so to wake up with it, it must be bad
DH wants me to take him to a urologist
Guess I'll start with the GP...
DS1 actually got a small infection in the skin of his foreskin - it ended up getting puss, just like a pimple.
Took a couple of weeks of antibiotics and lots of "air time" to clear up.
If it's red, even though it's cool at the moment, could he have some pants free time?
DS1 had a foreskin infection it was red and ballooned and had some pus discharge. We had some ointment to put on it and some antibiotics, cleared up fairly quickly once treated.
It could be related to fs retracting but maybe just an infection. Either way doesn't necessarily mean a gp visit (at least not right away). Are you making sure you clean it well? Gently pulling back the fs as far as it will go (obviously don't force it) shouldn't really need soap and soap can sometimes irritate more than help. If its red I'd be inclined to think its an infection, you can put a topical antibacterial cream or zinc even to speed up recovery. My boys have both had a couple of minor redness over the years.
I was thinking that perhaps he felt it hurt more after waking because the area had been *ahem* stretched while he was asleep.
Just some thoughts but I may not be making much sense today so I apologize in advance for that ;-)
Could it hurt more when he needs to pee or has an erection? I have an ex who had phimosis which went undiagnosed as a child.
It could be FL. not too sure. But he didn't complain aout it once today. Strange...
I posted a panicky thread a couple of years ago when we found out that DS2 had a very very tight foreskin.
Everything, everyone said circumcise. DH too. Same conversation as you, no doubt.
We went to a urologist.
I turned up at his consulting suites and he was wearing shorts and long socks and sandals and he was about 95.
I was terrified.
He was amazing. Told me they had it wrong for years. Unless they get lots of infections then nature will sort it all out and no nasty surgery required (its apparently very painful for older boys).
Phew.
Now whenever his penis is sore or red we know to keep an eye on it and it usually gets better very quickly.
I make sure we bath instead of shower. We never touch it (or try to pull the foreskin back) and I put whatever potion or lotion or cream I have around on it. Sudocrem, moogoo, oatmeal cream. Whatever is some kind of soothing treatment.
Also, I try to encourage him to not leak wee. I don't know if this makes a difference, but he's a bit lazy some days and doesn't wee when he needs to and lets little bits come out. I don't know if it makes a difference, but being warm and wet with urine all day can't help.
Leak wee?? DS1 does that all the time!!!! Hmmm... wonder if that has something to do with it?
Can't help you with the boy thing, but DD had a stage a little while ago where she'd never go to the toilet on time. Every single time she'd just hold it and leak, I wouldn't notice til I saw the wet patch. Otherwise she'd just stay like that for ages and it was every single time - I was washing a full load of her pants and knickers every second day :/
Anyway, she started to get a bit of a nappy rash from it (that and a soaking night nappy didn't help!). So I'd imagine if he's doing that it may cause redness, especially if maybe the foreskin is trapping some (though I have no idea if that can happen before it can retract).
