Hi ladies I'm super stressed and upset as my almost 9 month old ds is severely constipated to the point he scream cries in pain every time he tries to poo and only a small bullet size poo comes out that's stiff.
Tried coconut & olive oil inside bum, tried giving him oil orally, tried water but it's been about 5-6 days and nothing is helping.
Got him glycerol suppositories today but they kept causing him pain so he'd scream cry as I put them in which would make him tense up and the suppository would just pop out. Tried holding it in with my finger while he remain laying down and some melted but he just kept crying and screaming in pain and then I started crying too so just let it pop out and then fed him.
I am on the way to the docs now but just wanted to see if anybody else has had similar experiences and what ended up working for them?
He's exclusively breastfed bar the occasional solids (only fruit and veg) and been constipated before but the coconut oil in bum and drinking water brought it all out within 30mins.
I think it's banana that has caused this as both this time and last time he had had banana a few days in a row.
My DD had similar problems at this age and I found sitting her on a potty really helped. I think the different position helped to move things through.
I guess don't do banana again for a while? I took it as a sign that DD wasn't really ready to eat much and didn't let her have as much for a time. She was very keen, but actually a bit late to get going with food - her enthusiasm exceeded her capacity It was suggested to me to try pro-biotics, though I never really figured out how to get her to take them
Hope he's doing better soon.
Thank you everyone for the recommendations and concern *hugs*.
I'll try the foods suggested one at a time.
FL he had far less banana than that! :/ weird.
The pharmacist also recommended prune juice diluted with water so might try that first.
The doc prescribed some stool softener medicine and anti inflammatory ointment both of which I administered earlier. He did do a better poo before the meds so hopefully he's on the way to recovery.
Dates aid digestion? I didn't know that! However we've only been getting date filled sweets at people's houses (ma'moul) so will have to see if we have dates left over from Ramadan at home.
Around that age dd started only using her bowels every 9-10 days. She was primarily breast fed with solids as an added side thing/experience. It freaked me out a bit cos the day she would actually "go" she was uncomfy and when she went it was very solid and must have hurt her little tushie!
We ended up giving her watered down prune or pear juice each day and a couple of primes during food prep while she was sitting in the high chair wanting whatever we were making RIGHT NOW lol
After a couple of months (at most) her little tummy adapted to the changes with solids and it all resolved itself
Give the natural remedies a go - hopefully it will help
Yeah my SIL also suggested after reading online that it could be his body adapting to the changes to having solids rather than just the banana. Thanks heaps guys, the doc did give him a stool softener to use no more than 3 days but I think I won't use it today and just go with the prune juice. I'll also grab him a potty while I'm out and about, save my lazy self two trips .
try things like the bicycle motion with his legs to help a bit. stomach massage might help too.
DD liked to sit hanging over the edge of the arm of the chair with dh supporting her - her legs were tucked up a little towards her chest - she'd strain a bit, then stand herself up on DH's legs, then sit back down over it.
I gave all my babies sun dried prunes as one of their first foods (straight to finger food). I figured if anything was going to block them up, prunes wouldn't be it
