    Impetigo :(

DD has this. She hasn't been around any other kids since daycare last Friday. I just called them and there are no known outbreaks in her room. She has sores around her mouth that look awful although she is fine and happy. I read it is highly contagious so i'm scrubbing my hands all day. Now I have to find someone to watch her for me because I have to work. I'm guessing this is fairly common, but is there anything that is similar to this? The doctor I saw yesterday just sent me home with a steroid cream. But upon googling last night I was sure it was something more so got a second opinion and yes, it's impetigo. I'm just hoping that that's what it really is. Sad when you can't even trust the advice of a doctor these days.

Were you given an antibiotic cream? My kids have always been given antibiotics, or antibiotic creams.
When DS was a day old the girls contracted impetigo from my bil. Paed said after 24 hours on abs they wouldn't be contagious anymore & could be around him.

Is it possible to cover them? Our last lot, dd2 had one on her leg. Easily covered with a waterproof plaster to stop it spreading & because the gp is so far away now I tried home remedies successfully. Tea tree oil over a week or so was all I used. Took longer, but worked.

Treatment is antibiotics, yes. Oral or topical. It's not much fun. covering will help, too

Yes I have antibiotics and cream. The pharmacist said to use the repeat too, just to make sure it's gone. So that will be 18 days on AB's. Sounds like an awful lot to me They are all around her mouth so too hard to cover, she would just pull it off. Unless I use bandaids???

Really 24 hours? I was told she is contagious for as long as the blisters are present. And that I might be pushing my luck to have her ready for daycare next Wednesday

At the schools my children go to as long as the blisters are fully covered by a patch and tap they can go back to school. A bit hard around the mouth though!! My daughter got impetigo when she fell over and scratched her knee at seaworld!

    Impetigo :(

I've had it a few times in a circle on my face. I just used betadine and covered with a waterproof band aid.
It is excludable from childcare. "Exclude until appropriate treatment has commenced. Sores on exposed surfaces must be covered with a watertight dressing."
So if her sores cannot be covered or she may scratch them its probably safer to keep her at home.
The following chart link is also applicable in childcare, kinder etc.

    Re: Impetigo :(

I prefer to use the topical cream. I think it works faster.
You'll notice the difference within the first 24 hours though. 4/5 days and it should be pretty much non existent.
If there are still signs, use the repeat. But unless it is necessary, I personally wouldn't want my child on abs for that long.
    That's me though

    Re: Impetigo :(

The sores are healing up nicely The GP asked that i come back on Monday so I'll see what he says about the second dose of AB's. Not keen on a second repeat. Funnily enough she has been so so happy and playful all this week. But she's been cooped up in the house with my mum or SIL while I'm at work. She will be ecstatic to go to daycare next week

Plus i'm getting over a bout of gastro, I haven't eaten anything but a banana, very slowly, since Wednesday night. I feel sick and I'm scared to eat anything! It just makes me feel worse
