    Queensland schooling

Just wonderin if anyone can tell me how it works with applying for a public school outside of your catchment school? Ds1 is due to start school in 2018, but I'd like to try and get him into a school we are not in the catchment for.

Anyone know when they take applications for that year? Could I do it now ? Or do I need to wait till 2017 for the 2018 slots to open up?

My two boys are in a Catholic primary school in QLD and they either do the enrolment the year before (i.e. 2017 for 2018) or if the parents change their mind about starting the next year due to readiness, then they will hold it for the year after (i.e. from 2017, they will hold the place for 2019).

Public schools are pretty strict on the catchment areas so you will need a good reason such as specific program aimed for learning issues. I do know of at least one public primary school that accepted enrolments from outside of the catchment but that was due to low student numbers only.

Most of the ones I have dealt with put you on a waiting list and then its just a matter of waiting until they get their enrolments in for the next year and seeing if they can fit you in.

Are there any good ones around you without a catchment plan? I have two around my area without a catchment plan in place so I'm sending mine to a good school 20 minutes down the road, instead of the one 2 minutes away that we are in the catchment area for.

Which area are you looking in? Brisbane? Usually they mention it on their website if its current or not. Under enrolments usually, says something about the catchment area and most of them link to a map. If they don't say it then they usually don't have one in place. Every school has a catchment area, but some don't apply it to encourage new enrolments.
