    Thumbs up homeopathic medicine

elouise was diagnosed with reflux just before she turned six months old. the paediatrician put her on mylanta 5mL after four feeds per day. her silent reflux was not as painful, yet her throwing up hadn't changed. she would throw up at least 100mL a day. i'm not overguessing as the colous of her vomit changed as to when she had solids etc. so i took her to see a homeopathic healer and she's been having 2 medicines, alternating each twice (1,2,1,2) and her vomiting has gone down to the occasional posset (i really hate that word). so i think, if the reflux is not bad enough to require zantac or losec, see a natural healer. but they can cost a bit, and medicare don't cover any. mine was $80, but he was a friend's father in law so i was lucky to have a discount of 25%. she's so much happier now, except for teething again and having her jabs later this morning. good luck!

Catherine did you know you can get homeopathic vaccinations? And homeopathic teething relief? I use homeopathic meds all the time for my children.

I use the Brauers homeopathics for DS, but haven't taken him to an actual homeopath.
I also used homeopathy for labour, and my dog had homeopathic meds too.

oh yeah the brauers calm and teething relief are fantastic. We also use the Rescue Remedy in our house, everyone, adults, children and furbabies!

i use the brauers teething relief all the time, when she's teething. its just about the only thing that works. bonjela works, yet if i'm feeding it just gets washed away. and i prefer not to use panadol or nurofen if i can avoid it. i asked the paed about giving her the stomach calm and he said it won't help the reflux but it will calm things down in her tummy. i'm going to get the calm and the pain relief ones from brauer soon.

We use homeopathics on both boys, and have had varied success, with Parkers reflux it hasn't helped too much, but there are a lot of things that help them from getting coughs and colds and these generally work well (which in turn helps the reflux)

Our homeopath, just moved to Tasmania, but she was only $40 a session and you can buy remedies off the internet. The only thing I can suggest is go to one who is knowledgeable in children.

Just out of interest mummycate, what remedies are you using? I wonder if we have tried the same ones?

i have no idea whats in it. i asked and he said its not really herbal and was quite confusing. its not really helping anymore. i'm going to have to get those reflux tests. barium swallow, endoscope etc.

Ours have a lable on them and they have numbers, I agree very confusing, I was just wondering if the numbers were the same.

I was going to say that if it isn't helping, then you don't necessarily need to start testing unless prescription medicine isn't working. So basically the first line of defence is generally zantac and give this two weeks, a lot of babies do really well on zantac as long as it is adjusted regularly with weight gain, if after a couple of weeks this is not helping then a different type of medication called a proton pump inhibitor is used, in Australia there is losec and zoton, which are generally used in babies.

We use losec, and getting it into a liquid has been a pain to find someone who does it, but now that is all sorted then life is good.

With reflux meds, the doctors will generally prescribe them on the principle of if they work, then it is reflux. Testing is not necessary unless there is rapid weight loss, Failure to thrive, the meds aren't working, or the reflux is persisiting past a year old. So definately get to a doctor and get them to listen.

Good luck, and if you have any questions please post.

well its the fact that el power vomits 500ml at a time. which is more than two feeds worth. yesterday it was the 1030 feed 220ml and 1400 feed 220ml thrown up. 4 hours between feeds, i should think that it would have been digested. the numbers on the bottles are: 0408-01 and 0408-02. el is on good weight gain, but its hard to be sure as i've weighed her on lots of different scales.

Most doctors would say that if they are gaining weight well and they aren't too fussed, then to let it be and see how they do. I err on the other side, I would get it checked out. There are pediatric gastro intestinal specialists that do reflux and other stuff. Not digesting food or drink for 4 hours at a time, is consistent with both reflux, and also something called delayed gastric emptying, there are medicines that can be given to speed up the digestion of the milk so that it goes through faster.

If you don't want to go that far yet, I would take her to the health nurse and get her weighed regularly there, so that you have a basis using the same scales, and same circumstances, if she is vomiting that much, then she may start to loose weight soon if it isn't getting better.

Have you tried thickening the bottle to help it settle? It sometimes helps.

i have an appt with the paed tomorrow. i'm getting those tests done. the reason he didn't want to do anything was she hopefully would grow out of it. but he emphasised the fact that if she was not improving or getting worse, to come back asap. he also wants to find the actual cause and not trial an error all sorts of medicines. the mylanta was something ofa comfort, pain relieving thing to help her grow out of it. but she has been too grizzly and vomits randomly that i want the tests done. i was hoping she'd improve on her own, but i'm not letting her be unwell for much longer. yeah she's on karicare thickened AR formula. and taking solids but she loses interest in lunch and dinner quickly, but loves fruit and/or yougurt for brekky. today she's been really grizzly. but i can't do much about it. have to wait to see the doc tomorrow.
