Milk coming out of bub's nose

This arvo when I BF my baby, I nearly died as milk came out of his nose. Has anyone else seen this? It scared me.

i haven't had this happen and this is just imo but maybe he had a little puke and as he was still attached and sucking it couldn't come out of his mouth.

    Hi Caz

I experienced the milk coming up my bubs nose when I just bought him home from hospital. It really freaked me out too. The next day I asked the midwife that came to my home and she said it was completely normal and not to worry at all. I think it is like an overflow valve type of thing... Dont worry, its all good. Thomas sometimes still has it run out.

I must be a really bad mum, but it always made me laugh when this happened to mine. I reckon it's just because they are little piggies!

This has happened to us twice, the first time after a feed in the pram at the shops, he did a big spew and it came out of his nose as well and the last time it happened was after a feed just as he was falling asleep. My thoughts on it was that he was a bit too full!! lol..

Yup, DD did this too, especially when she was sick. Midwife said it was all fine, not to worry.

As an aside, the larynx in newborn babies stands up high, so not only can air get into the lungs more easily (babies can actually couple the back of the nasal cavity directly to the larynx so they can drink and breathe at the same time!), even when the larynx isn't coupled to the sinus, milk can flow down either side, so they don't choke whether the milk is coming up or going down and they can use the nostrils as an overflow valve if the milk is flowing fast. Pretty amazing! The larynx descends as we age, and some scientists believe that because a descended larynx allows a far greater vocal range, it is what allows us to talk so well and was part of our evolutionary journey to being the dominant species.
