Basinet????? Did you use one and was it worth it????
Hi I've just bought an impulse buy of a Basinet, I was just wanting to know if you used one was it worth it? With my other 2 we put them straight into the cot, in our room for 6-9months then into their rooms. I'm rather confused this time, we can't fit the cot in our room as we upgraded to this giant king bed and have lost the room we previously had.
Thanks in advance!

We used a cradle for DS and will be for this baby.. but only because its a family thing and we didnt have to pay for it. Otherwise i honestly dont think its worth the money. I know it wasnt in our case of DS as he was only in it for 6 weeks as he got too big after that.
We also didnt have him in our room. We did for the first night but he made too much noise and we were awake all night. He spend the first few nights in the cradle in the lounge room which is just out our door, and then we just moved him into his room.
I too just used the cot for my first 3 but on impulse bought a cradle for number 4. We used till she was almost 5 months and the only reason we stopped using it was because she was a wriggler. and would wriggle up to the edges so I thought a cot would be better and so far it has been..
so yes i think bassinets or cradles are a good idea.. A lot depends on the size of the bassinet though.
We used one for DD, one of the old cane ones. We were at my parents for the first week or two after leaving hospital, and there was no way a cot would've fitted in the room. It was fantastic for me after having a c/s as it meant she was right there for me to pick up if i wanted.
Mum got rid of it, so we spent a long time debating if we should get another one or not this time round. The cheapest we could find was around $150, which we didn't want to spend considering DD didn't spend all that long in hers.
I then saw one in the Target catalogue on sale for about $90, so mum put it on layby for me.
We have picked it up, but not taken it out of the box yet. It will be used at my parents when we leave hospital, and then when we get home, we will have it in our room.
We made sure it had wheels so we can wheel it from room to room, plus it's also the height thing so I don't have to bend over the side of a cot after my c/s.
My only concern was that I didn't get to see one IRL, so I don't know how long it is? But brand new, with stand and wheels for 90 bucks, I don't think I will be too worried about how long it lasts. I really think it comes down to your personal preference. What works for you may not work for someone else and vice versa.
We also have a king bed, so no room for a cot in with us either! Yet another reason for us to have one.
I bought a cradle for $20 from ebay that we used for Izzy and we just bought a new mattress for it and we loved it. I feel like they are so tiny in a cot and being a winter baby I worried about keeping her warm, whereas in the cradle they seem so snug and safe!!! I know they are fine in a cot too but I do prefer them in a smaller bed while they are so little and this one will be in our room for a bit long too and there is no room for a cot either so I think they are a pretty good investment - even though it is a relatively short time that they are used.
Yep definitely worth it.
Although mine was a gift, to do over again I would have bought one.
It made the first few weeks so much easier with the feeding every 3-4 hours. I think it was less disruptive for him as i didnt have to wait to hear him cry in the other room, turn any lights on to get up to him, and for me I didnt have to find warm clothes or freeze my butt off. He's still using it and we will continue to for a while yet. After that I think I might get a snugglebed so he can cosleep with us.
yeah i loved my one and using it again for number 3 it is family didn't have to buy it but would if didn't have this one, my two where in it tillabout 6 months.
Yep, I used a cradle next to our bed. DD stayed in it until she was six months old (and she's a tall baby).
I also used the pram bassinette heaps too so I could have her in the same room as me for her day sleeps. Plus, we took it with us when we went away for the odd weekend.
Definitely worth it for us.
And when she went into her big cot, it was like having a newborn again because she looked so little!
um, ... our bub was in her bassinette in our room until she simply could 'not' fit into it anymore ... yeh, it was a long time ... though my excuse was that our bub was a shorty & we loved her in our room far too much & also the bassinette fitted better than the cot
We've still got our lil girl in a cradle in our room - she is 8 months old, and our third Daughter. We currently doing up plans for rennovations, new bedrooms, new playroom, so until thats done, she will be in our room.
All our girls have slept in our room for at least the first 6 weeks in a cradle.
This current situation isnt ideal, but i defn think a cradle/bassinette is worth the money.....
We have had borrowed bassinettes for all 3 and I loved it. DS was in his in our room until 7 months when he was really getting too big and could sit up in it!! I think I would buy one if I didn't have one to borrow.
I put DD straight into the cot. We had a one bedroom "duplex" so it wouldn't have made a difference to us cot or bassinette, same room. But I personally think a bassinette is a great idea until they start to sleep through a bit more. At least 3 months, so you can tend to them quicker and easier. I'm sure you can borrow one or at best, get one off ebay.
Just wanted to say thanks for the advice and great ideas... i am thinking of getting a bassinette too! Did anyonw hire one? If so, how much did it come to? And did anyone put their bubs in with their toddlers, if you have a toddler? How did that go? Just wondering whether to put bub in with us or his/her brother! Cheers.
I think basinettes and cradles are the most gorgeous thing to buy... I wanted one with our first but thought it wasnt parctical... But as a gift my MIL brought me one... Its lovely... Unfortunatley my DS sisnt like to sleep in it... first week was great then he went off it. so we didnt get much ise out of it... This time round my DD apeared to be the same but i put up with the crying and now she loves sleeping in it... She'll be in there for few more weeks til she's too big. Unfortuatley they dont make them as big as the older ones.
I agree with the post about ebay... a friend of mine brought hers on ebay for a great price of $80... my MIL paid $230 + for ours.
My DS has been in a basinette in our room until last week - 8 weeks. He's still in it but we've moved it to the lounge room & once he gets over his cold he'll be in his own room for a couple of nights before we put him in his cot. Ours was a gift but I probably would have bought one anyway. I reckon the plastic ones you can hire would be great. They are just like the ones they use at hossy. You can elevate bubs head with them so they are great for bubs who are chucky.
I always wanted one with DS1, but we couldn't really afford it and whatnot.
This time around I got one. At first I was reading different things and how some people thought they were a waste and weren't used much, so I was worried I'd wasted my money, but DP and I both think it's one of the best buys I've done.
I got mine off ebay too, brand new. It was like $120 including the postage to get it here and we live in a country town.
I love it. DS2 seems to love it too.
