I would love to hear if anyone else little baby is the same.
My little boy is 6 weeks on monday and have noticed that he isnt being startled with loud noise. Im really worried and was wondering if anyone elses new born hasnt startled to noise too. Ive tried making noise when he is sleeping (mind you my 2 1/2 DS makes so much noise) but nothing. Ive tried when awake and still nothing. Ive dropped things, burst balloons x2 yelled and nothing. Im so scared he is deaf and not sure how to handle it. Im trying today to do some more and if nothing will look into it.
If you're worried about it, and you've tried all those things, I would take him to the Doctor and get a hearing test. If everything's fine, then you don't have to stress anymore. But if they find a problem, at least you found it early, KWIM?
Missy sorry to hear of your concerns. I would definitely go and see someone, but I just want you to know that my friend recently had twin girls and they have 3 older girls too. She said the babies are happiest when it's noisy. She brings them to tiny tots and I have commented that Im amazed they don't react to the noise.
So hopefully it's the same thing and noise is a sort of calming thing for Liam xoxoxoxox

I would speak to your MCHN, she will definitely be able to tell you if there is a problem or not pretty quickly. I know my MCHN would see me ASAP if I had any concerns.
Did your bubba have a hearing test when he was born?
MJ doesnt always startle to noises and i noted that when she was a baby she didnt always either... I remember thinking the same as you, but as she had a hearing test done when she was a coupke of days old (done in the hossy) i figured that she would be fine.
When you were pg, he was probably subjected to different noises and grew use to them, especially that of your other DS would have been around.
Maybe these things dont bother him, does he appear to recognise your voice and that of your family? when you sing songs is there any recognition?
If you are worried thou, go and see your Maternal health nurse as they will be able to check them and give you peace of mind.
At that age they can't test the hearing as such, but they can test that the sound signal is getting to the brain. It can be done even while the baby is sleeping. This is done to all nbs in Qld (where the parents consent). If you have had this test already, there is not much more they can do just yet. But if you haven't, it might be worth it to give you some peace of mind. As I say, they can't tell you for sure that he is hearing, but it rules out some of the problems which lead to deafness.
I hope this is nothing for you. If it helps, I have heard of this before - I even think I was worried about DS1's hearing in the early days for the same reason. And he hears just fine (too well actually, he doesn't miss hearing or repeating anything LOL!). So there is most likely nothing to worry about. The check is probably for your peace of mind more than anything, and also so that IF there is a problem, it can be treated early.
Missy, when CJ had his newborn hearing test at the hospital they gave me a booklet with a hotline for hearing... Called NSW Statewide Infant Screening Hearing Program - Information Line - 1800 551 175. Maybe they might be able to point you in the right direction.... Or else the booklet suggests getting a referral from your GP for a hearing test...
Awww thankyou all so much for your replies. Some of you have made me feel as if he is just use to noise so im hoping that is the reason.
I have made a appoitment at the Jim Patrick Audiology at North Rocks but cant get in till, Of all days my birthday. 20th October. They can do a test on new borns which is abit more intense then teh one in hossy (which he had and passed) but they have to be sleeping (which is fine) but for 3 hrs.
sunflowa_girlie DH is taking him to the docs tonight to get a referal as im such a sook and would only break down. Of cause im thinking the worse.lol
Hi Meg. Thanks hun for popping in. Yes Im hoping he is just use to callum yelling and banging on things. I dont keep him quiet as I want liam to be able to sleep when callum is making alot of noise and I dont think its far on callum shooshing him up all the time. How you doing your self hun???
Trish I did talk to the nurse yesterday and she was the one that gave me the number to the hearing place. She didnt seem to concerned as Liam passed the test in hossy and that he has abit of a cold and she thinks he might just have abit of glue ear. (fluid)

Well all I thank you so much and now im abit better, well not crying anymore, well alittle bit but hey we are mothers and the worry will never end.
DS never really startled with noises for a LONG time. But he would turn to look if he heard my voice, which can be a better home-test. Is your Liam able to do that yet?
Rosehip Liam has started to following me when I walk passed so I might talk or sing when he is not looking at me (standing away) and see if he looks for me. Thanks hun.
might sound funny but have you clapped behind his ears - this was the only thing that startled DS when he was a baby
you have to do it when he doesn't know you're there though as he might not react to it otherwise - good luck hopefully it's just him being a fantastic peaceful baby - but like you said as mothers we never stop worrying
