My lovely MIL put this question to me when I mentioned to her I had reduced DD's daily bottles.
For babies who are having bottles of formula, what is the normal amount per day after 12 mnths? I was under the impression that by a year old, they can pretty much do without regular bottles if they're eating well. I thought all that follow-on formula stuff was a bit pointless...
DD eats like a trooper and so far so good, she's not fussy. Will eat her meat, fish, veg, dairy, bread, fruit, yoghurt, whatever. So I saw no reason to keep up her 3 x 180ml bottles a day as I feel she gets what she needs from her solids. Now it's just one bottle when she wakes up and one bottle at bedtime. In between, she drinks water from a cup.
Neuri at 12 months we switched to cows milk and DD was having 2 bottles a day - one in morning and one before bed. She is a great eater too! I don't think that toddler formula is necessary either and a lot of them have quite a lot of sugar.
My DD has three bottles of cows milk of approx 230ml each. She also has 3 solids a day.
I too think that toddler formula is a marketing ploy. DP still seems quite keen on giving her SOME formula so that, "she gets all her vitamins and minerals," but I tell him that's what food's for. Similar to vitamin pills for adults IMO - not usually necessary if you have a balanced diet.
She sounds like my MIL! Takes too much notice of ads on TV
Mine were fully BF but by 12 months were happily drinking water from a sippy cup because during the day there was too much to do to stop for a feed! We just did a night feed for a little longer till that one wasn't wanted either.
If they are eating well and drinking plenty of water then I don't think there is any need to continue on with formula just to get the nutrients.
i switched to cows milk @ 12mths, he was a good eater but my boy still has his milk in a sippy cup. and has 2 a day but is now cutting down to one a day
