19 week scan - what to expect

    Hi everyone
I've been keeping a hold on all my fears but today I've got myself in a real state about my scan on Monday...particularly because it's the 13th!

I have a general idea that they will be checking all bub's 'bits' but how long will it take? Will they tell us then and there if there is something wrong? How often do things go wrong at this stage? My 16 week scan was all good...would they have picked something up then? Thanks for reading this far if you've made it through all my rambling questions!

Hun, my birthday is on the 13th, trust me, there is nothing bad about the 13th

Generally the morphology (20 week) scan takes about 1/2 an hour, depending on whether bubs is co-operating. They may tell you if they susect something is wrong, or they may tell you to see your Ob or MW.

It is rare for them to find anything wrong so just sit back, relax, and hope that bub does something cute like wave at you. We have a pic of DD2 waving at us, it was awesome!

If you want to knw the sex of your bub you need to ask at the beginning of the scan so they know to look.

    Hi Ellie,

My 12wk scan was on 'Friday the 13th' and everything was perfectly normal.

My 20wk scan went for about an hour... only because bubs was not behaving (already a trouble maker ) They couldn't get a good look at his face and heart because of the way he was lying. After a bit of proding, walking and jumping around he eventually turned.

I too was nervous before my scan, I think everyone is. I'm sure you have a beautiful, healthy baby in there! Try to relax and enjoy it, as soon as it is over you will wish you could see him/her again.

All the best and make sure you let us know how you go

    Hey Ellie!
I just HAD my morphology scan like..a few hours ago!
It was great. I had a sonographer who was in training so we sat there in amazement looking at my baby for nearly an hour!
He measured practically everything. I especially loved watching the little heart beat and flow , its only the size of a thumbnail at the moment!
My 3 year old kept saying "look fire in the baby's heart" which made me cry nearly, you'll understand why come Monday.
Its a really relaxed routine check, so just lie back in wonder and watch bubby kick, twitch and roll.

ps- By the way allioops, its my bday on MOnday the 13th too! so it looks like its going to be a very exciting day!
    Best of Luck

Just keep talking with the technician. Be amazed and hopefully the technician will talk about what he/she is looking at and explain it all for you!

Good idea Amy...talking is something I'm very good at lol!
I have requested the same technician we had at 12 weeks ...she was so compassionate and understanding of our journey. I phoned yesterday to confirm and we are definately having her...so I'm really happy with that! She spent about 40 mins with us at the 12 week scan so hopefully she'll be able to spend a bit of time with us...actually feeling a little excited now...thanks

Good luck with your scan on monday Ellie. Everything will be fine. Enjoy every minute of it as the time goes by so quickly!!! I was amazed at how quickly they grow. The difference from the 12 week to the 19 week scan is really crazy!!!!

Hi Ellie, it's lots and lots of measuring!! Mine went for 1.5 hours... and believe it or not, I got bored....I never thought that would happen!! But they check all the parts of the heart, brain, blood flow etc etc. Limb, bone measurements etc. They also found cysts on Coco's brain, which I now know is perfectly normal, but at the time I didnt' and there was no one to talk to us afterwards, so I strongly suggest you have someone to sit with after and go through the scan with. There are usually Dr's there to do that but for some reason we ended up at a place that they didnt' do that, even though it was a very prestige hospital in Syd. I am still astounded as to why we didnt' get seen after.
Anyway, it's a very special time and if you request to see the sex, they will do their best but it's not always possible to see (and on the other hand sometimes it's way obvious, so if you don't want to know tell them that too)!!!
Good luck, you'll be fine and it will be amazing!!! xoxoxo

Hey, i know i gave you some of my thoughts in the other thread but just wanted to give you one more hug. All is crossed for you and i can't wait to hear all the good news on Monday. Ours is at 9.30am - what time is yours? I have to go to work after so will check in when i can. As i said earlier, forget the 13th thingy - instead of looking for reasons to freak out, look at the positives - this is a routine scan and even if they picked up something, usually they are things that can be sorted. Withmy pregnancy with 0li, they told me at this 19week one that i had placenta previa. Nothing wrong with him, just that the placenta was attached low in the uterus and this would mean i may have to have a caesar. In the end it moved up and i got a natural birth. So, although none of us can predict the future, the odds are definately in our favour! Relax and enjoy, thats what i'm going to try and do...
    Good luck xxx

Good luck tomorrow Ellie- one more sleep..... WOOOT!

Like everyone else has said they check and measure everything. They count fingers and toes, measure bone lengths, head diameter, stomach diameter, look at spine, look at the facial structures, check the chambers of the heart, check the ventricles of the brain, have a look at the kidneys and bladder, liver, stomach, your placenta and the umbilical cord. the list could go on. Basically they check EVERYTHING! Morphology scan generally takes alot longer than the 12 week scan. But do ask loads of questions, especially if you don't understand something or are worried.
Can't wait to hear how it goes. xx
